I love the Christmas season. But what I love more is when people give of themselves to others instead of giving of so much material stuff. Thoughtful gifts last a lifetime and you don't get thoughtful gifts by cramming all your Christmas shopping for people into one or two "sale" days at big box stores.

I urge you to instead take advantage of Small Business Saturday to support local businesses and your neighbors who own them and who work in downtown Marietta.

Believe me, no bah humbug here. Just a belief that consumerism drives the quest for immediate gratification of cheap (and badly made), disposable, imported junk. Stop buying all this crap people and stop supporting all these big box stores.

CNN: "The start of the holiday shopping season Thursday included reports of fights among shoppers at numerous Wal-Marts nationwide." hey...it's cheaper than pay-per-view!

The so-called "Small Business Saturday" would be an actual good thing if it wasn't "sponsored" and promoted by American Express and Visa, whose exorbitant fees force small business owners to either raise their prices (which means they can't compete with big stores) or forgo any meaningful profit margin.

If you shop small businesses, especially if you're making a small purchase, PAY CASH.
