At the house in San Francisco; a reception for Prince Michael of Kent, whose father, the Duke of Kent and younger brother of George VI, was killed in late 1940 coming back to England from the Royal Naval Base at Scappa Flow, Scotland. Prince Michael looked very eerily like George V, even more like his late distant cousin, the last Romanov Czar, Nicholas II, right down to the same type of beard. Very eerie to look into that large reception room at the house in Pacific Heights and see the Queen's cousin as almost a double for a murdered Russian Emperor. The Earl and Countess of Clarendon; their large estate in the Hampshires; a successful, large working farm of several thousand acres with cottages to rent, shooting parties for a fee; several times in the Fall, for the pheasant, grouse and partridge hunt. Pleasant, educated, hard working people keeping a large estate in the family since the 17Th Century free and clear of taxes and debt. Downton is almost true to life.
