colortv, I agree. Even if it were chump change to Lang, he still has other people such as a CFO or COO that review credit card purchases before paying the bills. Somebody dropped the ball on this, Lang should make sure people around him are doing their jobs.

How could a businessman not monitor his credit card statements? Same as an individual would do. Sloppy business if you ask me. Unbelievable.

If you don't think the government coming into a private company and dictating a wage above what the market will support is not theft and redistribution of wealth, well then you're a lib.....further the market would be self-regulating (higher wages naturally) if in fact the 15M MEXICANS weren't running around the country driving down the wages with cheap labor....as long as unemployment lasts 100 weeks, and we let in all the illegals, the bottom of the wage rung is going to be pretty low. We can build a 150,000 miles of interstate highways but can't build a 1000 mile fence; then wonder what's wrong.....Bush's fault...

Depression isn't an excuse for her behavior and I didn't mean to imply that it is. Chances are, if she does indeed have clinical depression, she was self medicating by stealing. Trying to make herself feel better. Sometimes a mentally ill person doesn't realize they are ill until they experience legal troubles. Getting caught is the best thing to have happened to her and her children in the long run. Restitution must occur if the punishment is to work.

ea333555: And then, after seeing the first rock land, he said, "You know Mom, sometimes you really tick me off". Mr Obama preaches redistribution from those who have to those perceived in need. She tried to cut out the middleman,i.e. the government. All she needs is a credit card with a high limit, take a cash advance and file bankruptcy on the card. The true American way.

How is she going to pay back $40K ?

A little at a time, even if she has to live on beans and rice...just b/c she doesn't have 40k cash doesn't excuse her from paying it back...

The comment about Lang having a lot of money makes no sense. They send bank robbers to jail, don't they? And banks have all kinds of money.

Why wouldn't Lang fire her? Most companies tend to have an issue with employees that steal from them. And, I salute Skinner Firestone for alerting Lang about her attempt to purchase tires with the company card. Lang pays his employees a good wage, depression is no excuse for stealing. Unless being depressed because you lack the drive to actually earn what your employer has achieved is considered reasonable.

The moral of this story is that, if you want to steal and get away with it, you need to be an attorney or a politician. (Although most politicians are attorneys...)

This is the same story everyone has when they get caught, it was a mistake , they were depressed, they wanted to buy amazon goods so they could have what the person down the street has. She was fine before she got caught but now there are all these reasons why she should not be punished. Well stealing is wrong, that's it, it's not like she did it one time. She constantly took money over a period of time, but now after getting caught she plans to pay it back so that she be the end of it?

The only way they can't account for all her Amazon purchases is if she is not cooperating or hiding accounts. I can go all the way back to 2001 and look at my purchase history at Amazon****, complete with invoices and the last four digits of the card used to make the purchase.

The depression could have played a role in the theft of money, but that doesn't mean the person shouldn't be held accountable for their actions. Wrong is wrong whether you are depressed or not.

I don't know that a lengthy jail/prison sentence will result in increasing the amount of restitution this young lady can pay, so I see no point in that.

Holding her accountable for the total amount of the theft with full restitution (even if it takes years to accomplish) is the best punishment as I see it. It's up to her to get restitution made. If that doesn't happen, then she should go to jail.

It's amazing how small minded some of the people commenting here really are. They have no relevant comments so they resort to name calling, not only of the person who committed the crime, but to somehow bring in President Obama.

I don't know the young woman, but I do know that untreated depression can cause many behaviors that mask it. I'm hopeful that the treatment she's getting will help her get her life back in order.

As for the asinine comment about Auto Zone accepting EBT/SNAP benefits, you are wrong Thrifty. SNAP benefits are used for only food! Check the USDA website and you will find that EBT/SNAP is used for: breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables, meats, fish and poultry, dairy products, and seeds and plants to produce food for the household to eat.

Theft is stealing and it's wrong. It doesn't matter how much money anyone has you shouldn't steal from your employer or anyone!! She should be sent to prison for her crime and then be required to pay back the money when she gets out of prison. She should never receive another tax refund or any other "bonus" money until her debt has been repaid. She could mow, clean, work along the road picking up trash and keep parks and grounds clean to help repay for her crime. We need more laws like Germany has that actually makes law breakers "work" to pay back to society for their crimes. An occasional road clean up or washing police officers vehicles isn't much of a pay back. But this girl admitted to her crime but she should have her just punishment not just a slap on the hand!

I'm with Liz on this one -- I don't even see the crime here. Lang has too much money, and this girl is just making up the difference between the EBT, free o-Phone, O-Care (which is looking to be free as more news comes out), EIC, etc. The soon-to-be-mandated minimum wage hike is essentially government-mandated theft, is it not? Required by law to pay more in wages than the market needs? She needs to learn that government-sponsored theft is OK, but individual initiative is to be discouraged and penalized....another sad day for society indeed....she's probably going to do time for being out ahead of O's minions, when in fact the libs could learn from her examples. Oh, AutoZone accepts EBT in case you didn't know......

Sell the tires, and all that she has purchased (except you can 't get a refund from Direct TV). The balance she can work off at the jail, with the county paying Lang's for her services. (The pay for what community work she does for the county).

So she's on medication for depression....boo, hoo....probably depressed that she got caught. It's going to be hard to come up with $40k without a job, isn't it?

constantly going on a comment board and bashing everyone who has ever made a mistake in life or acted in a manor they are ashamed of without knowing the whole story, that is much more reasonable, you are correct lizard

So she wants to pay it back? What's the problem then? She admitted to the thefts last October, said she was sorry, wanted to repay the stolen money , then was fired. How much has she paid back as of now? Saying she wants to pay back the money to look good in court and paying the money back are two different things. Her former employer does not want her items from amazon, he wants his money as as he should. I agree with sarek and Luv the south . I doubt she will pay back anything, and I bet there is not much of a sentence either.
