COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Celebrity zookeeper Jack Hanna says he's horrified that a Denmark zoo killed a healthy giraffe and fed it to lions, and he's working to save a second giraffe that may be killed at a different zoo there for similar reasons.
The Copenhagen Zoo said it killed a 2-year-old giraffe to prevent inbreeding. The carcass was butchered in front of a crowd.
Hanna calls that "abominable," saying the killing was wrong even if it hadn't become a spectacle. He says other facilities would have taken the animal and that option should've been used.
Hanna has raised $100,000 to help save a second giraffe at the Jyllands Park Zoo.
A spokeswoman at Ohio's Columbus Zoo, where Hanna is director emeritus, says options include moving that giraffe to another zoo closer to Denmark.
