District holds Spelling Bee

Waterford boy overall winner

The Switzerland of Ohio schools held their District Spelling Bee on Jan. 24 with 29 students representing all six of the district’s elementary schools competing. Students had competed and won spots from their school bees in order to compete at the district bee.

Stephen Hartline from Woodsfield Elementary was the overall winner of the District Spelling Bee. Rachel Hayes of Skvue Elementary was the runner-up and received an award for Outstanding Speller of seventh and eighth grades. Kayla McCloud received the award for Outstanding Speller of the fifth and sixth grades.

The top eight students, plus one alternate, from the schools’ District Spelling Bee will go on to compete in February at the Regional Spelling Bee in Marietta.

The top spellers going on to compete at the regional event will be:

¯ Stephen Hartline, Woodsfield Elementary (winner).

¯ Rachel Hayes, Skyvue Elementary (Outstanding Speller of seventh and eighth grades)

¯ Mitchell Earley, Sardis Elementary.

¯ Mikayala Blackstone, Skyvue Elementary.

¯ Kara Watters, Woodsfield Elementary.

¯ James Miller , Powhatan Elementary.

¯ Kayla McCloud, Powhatan Elementary (Outstanding Speller of fifth and sixth grades)

¯ Martin Chambers, Skyvue Elementary.
