Hundreds of people turned out to show their support for the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley Wednesday. Officials from Zootoo.com were in town to visit the shelter. Zootoo is choosing one shelter to receive a $1 million makeover, and another will receive $10,000.
The local shelter is one of 20 to receive the highest “scores” through an Internet contest. The local shelter will receive $5,000 just for placing in the top 20.
We think the Zootoo representatives were probably impressed with the outpouring of support. And we’ve been impressed with the community support seen throughout this process.
But we also hope that no matter what the outcome, the community support that’s bubbled up in recent weeks will continue in the months to come.
This shelter, as is the case with so many, has struggled financially over the years. There are plenty of animal lovers in Washington County, but too many of us take the shelter for granted. We assume it will always be there and have the resources it needs.
To the contrary, it operates on a very limited budget and relies on the generosity of groups and individuals.
The local shelter is lucky to be in the position it’s in. Thanks to the hard work of some dedicated workers, volunteers and board members, our small shelter got noticed in this national competition. The shelter is already set to see some financial gain, but its financial needs will continue long into the future.
We urge the community to continue to show its support of the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley long after the excitement over Zootoo has died down. The shelter animals, and the people who care for them, are counting on you.
