Warren boys take division at Morgan

From staff reports
POSTED: May 5, 2008

McCONNELSVILLE —Warren senior Tyler Cantley and Morgan freshman Cassie Copeland were the individual high scorers Saturday, leading their respective teams to divisional titles at the 28th annual Morgan Invitational at Morgan High School.

Cantley was part of two new meet records as he anchored Warren’s 4x800 relay (8:05.80) behind Justin Roush, Sam Majoy and Nick Wilson and won the 800-meter run in 1:58.60. Cantley also edged Wilson in the 1,600-meter run (4:32.60) and anchored Warren’s winning 4x400 relay (3:34.70) behind Majoy, Roush and Andrew Wunderlich.

Wilson also established a new meet record in the boys 3,200-meter run (9:44.90).

Warren’s boys won all four relay races and had multiple placers in all but two events in amassing 199 points. Morgan was a distant second with 69 points and Waterford was third in the 14-team field with 41 points. Warren’s boys remain undefeated on the season.

“We had a pretty good day,” Warren boys track coach Al Riffey said. “Our times are really consistent right now. The distance kids keep dropping their times.”

Behind the efforts of Cantley and Wilson, Warren’s distance runners have been the team’s strong suit, but Riffey has seen continued improvement from his sprinters — Andrew Wunderlich, Andrew Dunfee, John Starner and Tim Najewicz.

Riffey agreed that this year’s team is perhaps the most balanced track squad he’s had at Warren.

“The 2004 team that won the SEOAL (Southeastern Ohio Athletic League) was strong in the hurdles and sprints, while our distance guys were just starting to develop. Cantley was just a freshman back then, but I’d say in my 18 years this is about as solid a team as we’ve had.”

On the girls’ side, the competition was much more even with Morgan leading the way with 91 points and Warren finishing second with 75. Waterford finished third (71 points) and Belpre was fourth (62 points).

Three girls meet records were set with Waterford senior Ashleigh Tornes being part of two of them. Tornes ran the lead leg on Waterford’s 4x800 relay (10:13.50), which also featured Courtney Barker, Sina King, and Jessi Drayer, and broke the existing meet standard in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:48.10.

Belpre’s 4x200 relay team of Justine Hendershot, Cydney Hoffman, Callie Logston, and Hannah Hoffman turned in a time of 1:49.30.

Individually, Copeland breezed to a win in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.10 seconds and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.61 seconds). She also placed third in the 100-meter dash in 13.20 seconds and ran the second leg on Morgan’s 4x100 relay, which placed second.

n NEXT MEET: Gallia Academy at WARRIORS, 4:30 p.m., Tuesday.
