Marietta City Schools trim staff to save $700,000

By Sam Shawver, sshawver@mariettatimes.com
POSTED: May 20, 2008

Hoping to stave off a looming financial crisis, the Marietta City Schools Board of Education on Monday unanimously approved the elimination of 11 positions, including several teaching jobs, for the 2008-2009 school year.

“These are real people with real lives. This is not pleasant for us, yet our financial situation underscores that we have to do it,” board president Jack Moberg said prior to the vote.

The reductions are expected to save the district $700,000 next year, according to district treasurer David Combs.

Four of the positions are being eliminated through attrition, including a school nurse, guidance counselor and math teacher at Marietta High School and one aide position at Marietta Middle School.

Those employees are either resigning or retiring and their positions will not be filled next year.

Seven other jobs, including a dean of students, aide, two business education teachers, a family and consumer science teacher, and a physical education instructor at MHS, will be lost through a direct reduction in force.

“We really don’t want to cut anything, but this school system is in serious trouble,” said board member Allen Love. “More than 80 percent of our budget is in salaries and benefits, and the cuts have to be made somewhere.”

None of the affected employees apparently attended Monday’s meeting, and no one addressed the planned reductions in force during the public comments phase of the session.

But several people expressed concern that the girls golf team could be eliminated as the board considers further cuts.

“We may lose our team, and I don’t want that to happen,” said Lori Amrine, a district teacher and coach of the girls golf team.

“We have eight girls now and the team has improved immensely, and our program is growing,” she said. “We want it to continue to grow.”

Amrine said the team requires little funding, approximately $3,500 a year, and added that she would be willing to forgo her coaching salary to keep the team active. She said the girls pay for their own equipment and clothing, and the boosters organization takes care of overnight lodging and meals.

Tim Amrine said the girls could join the boys team, but they would most likely not get the chance to play because the district has an excellent boys team.

“We started two years ago with four freshmen and two sophomores,” he said. “The team has struggled, but the girls have really enjoyed it and have improved. I hope you will consider keeping this team.”

North Hills building

Betty Fleming of Hickory Lane also asked the board about plans to sell the former North Hills Elementary School building.

“Have you considered a direct sale instead of an auction for that property?” she asked.

“We can only do a direct sale to another government entity,” Combs explained.

The property, including the building on more than seven acres, has been appraised at $275,000 if sold as-is, according to district business manager Bob Strobl.

Fleming said she was concerned that the property would be purchased and developed with small rental homes that could affect the neighborhood property values.

Moberg said the North Hills school sale would be discussed at a separate future public meeting. He said that meeting date has not yet been determined.

The next regular school board session is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on June 30.

I love how people get on their soapbox and use their children as pawns for their arguments.

We always here how it isn’t the children’s fault and that they shouldn’t be the ones to make the sacrifices to balance the schools budgets.

The next thing out of their mouths is what really shocks me – “The teachers need to take a cut in pay!”

If we really do love and care for our children, why would we want to cut the already low pay for the people that we entrust with the most important job in raising our children outside of the home?

If these parents really believe what they preach they would step up to the plate and take a cut in pay themselves in the form of a school levy tax. They never want to do that even though it is their little darlings that they claim are getting short changed.

Direct your energy towards the state legislators and let’s get the problem of school funding fixed in Ohio.

spend time researching instead of blaming. Teachers taking acut is ludicrous. That would be like me asking you to pay them more.

Get real. Take a minute call Jennifer Garrison, Ted Strickland, or that other women who respresents us, oh Joy whoooooo??

The time it took you to write you fault finding you could have emailed all three of them.

Have you been to a board meeting, talked with board members?

As I'm sure many of you know, this is going on all over Ohio...in the cities and smaller towns. As a few of you have said, the Ohio system needs revamped before postive results can be seen. Some other states "seem" to have more money because they are funded differently.

80 percent of the school budget is salary - what percentage of that is at the White House. I don't see any cuts there

To Indian I'm not whining, our school board can't control their money. I'm not blaming our teachers, they won't have jobs is positions have to be cut to save money. I would rather take a cut then lose my job. If the system is in financial need then we don't give staff raises every year. Our school system has been in trouble since 1999 or 2000. Pattij I agree families will leave the area because of the school system. Over half of our population now in this town is retired.

I am afraid that soon, no one will move their families here because we have a school system that does not work.

Anyone who blames the teachers on this subject has no clue of what is going on in the world, in the state, or in the county.

Take off the sunglasses, loosen the strap on your baseball cap, and think this through.

Our funding formula is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.(period) Case closed.

Now when the next group of cuts come, and when Mr. Moberg finally annouces we are going to need another levy, do not be so surprised, and blaming the people who will be as affected as anyone else.

If consolidation was the only answer, the State would step in and consolidate all the medium-small schools tomorrow. But I am pretty sure that is only a bandaid to the funding formulas.

You know where the money is going dont you? Or is everyone so blinded by self indulgence. Look at the economy mainly. Lets say in 2004 the school system pays out $500,000 a year in fuel . Now today that would be the equivalent to 2 MILLION !! Now there is $1.5 million that they could use. Just wait though. Those people that have the $$$ to do whatever. #Wait until it starts to put the crunch on them and then we will get somewhere .People we have to wake up and take back our country. And quit letting foreign countries control what we can and cant do. !

Ohiogirl--most teachers have 6-7 years of college. Beginning teachers make around 26,000 in this area AND have taken a reduction in benefits. I really think you need to reread your post and understand that those teachers spend more time with your chidren than you do. If you think they are getting rich by doing it, you are sadly mistaken. The school funding formula is wrong. Schools are spending extra money on gas, special education, and insurance. Before you write things down, investigate your facts.

cutting out time on physical education doesnt seem logical...Obesity is very high and we just want to add to the problem.....Granted its not the teachers fault and they do not deserve a cut, but cutting people or programs now only makes it easier to cut them again later...

AND THEN there are teachers that are not even teaching they are just there putting in the time they give the kids a book,if they have one tell them to do the lesson and grade them from there, and this one case most kids dont get above a B ever in that class and some of the most intelligent kids at that school have a B in that class my kids not going to that teacher I hope that teacher retires, its like anything we have some good and some bad then they do away with fitness class gym class no wonder where is the stay active, what is our world coming to what are we allowing to happen in our little city, i only know what I hear and its not good!!!!!!!! glad I dont have kids in this system anymore

Ohiogirl must be from some other planets; like maybe Pluto.

Surely you cannot blaame teachers for the ignorance of our law makers.

The judge said school funding is unconstitutional.

If other things are against the constitution, someone seems to fix it or go to jail.

No one has fixed it yet, no one has gone to jail, but people like Ohiogirl continue to blame teachers.

Maybe they do not need a book for that class.

I am sure you are not being charged books fees for books that are not used.

POur board makes some crazy decisions, maybe if you threw your hat into the ring you can make it better. Or crazier. Don't cry or whine; jump in.

But believe me, the teachers are not the blame either way.

Call the board; call Jennifer Garrison; call Ted Strickland.

Do something beside whining.

What is it that yes WV schools seem to be in better shape all together. We were promised things when reno and North Hills was shut down and the board failed to uphold all that. I think the teachers need to take a cut in pay and benefits not take from our children. The district needs to look at the rest of the communities employment in the area, businesses closes and the price of everything going up they need to live in there means not with everyone elses. It is not the children's fault. These children are our future. What do the children gain when a program is cut nothing, but the teachers still get a raise!! I have two children in this district and they have classes where they don't even have text book for that class or part of the year. Why pay school fees? This school district is to money hunger, I'll never vote for a levy for them! Our children deserve a better education!

Marietta,Warren,Frontier and Belpre are ALL in trouble money wise. West Viginia schools consolidate, they seem to have newer buildings. I figure we could have best of both worlds in this. Only bad part to this would be the bus ride for the children. But then again the WCCC does this. Just a thought!
