Dick Burkhart, 67, of Marietta, son of the late William J. and Anna Klinger Burkhart, passed away at home Monday (June 30, 2008) after a long illness. He was born in Marietta, on July 17, 1940.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judith Marple Burkhart; his son, Scott Burkhart and his wife, Jayne, of Vienna, W.Va.; and his daughter, Susan Burkhart Cavalier and her husband, Kevin, of Green, Ohio. His greatest joy was his granddaughters, Jordan Burkhart of Vienna, W.Va., and Mackenzie Cavalier of Green, Ohio. He is also survived by one brother, Michael Burkhart (Susan) of Marietta; four sisters, Marlene Casteel of Marietta, Carolyn (Tony) Roberto of Summerfield, Fla., Joyce Ellis of Lake City, Fla., and Mary (Bob) Brandon of Kent, Ohio; and stepmother, Eloise Burkhart of Marietta.
He graduated from Marietta High School in 1958. He was a member of the Carpenters Local 356 and then became a pipefitter with Local 168 until he retired in 2002. He was a legendary softball player for over 30 years. He loved to hunt and fish and was a member of the Frontier Bassmasters. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Marietta.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Churchtown. Burial will follow at Putnam Cemetery in Devola. Friends and family may visit McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home, 314 Fourth St., Marietta, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today.
