» Help Mariah SteeleThe Frontier High School senior injured while hiking in Scotland is one step closer to home, according to her family's pastor.
Mariah Steele, 17, who suffered a crushed pelvis, broken hip, broken arm and broken fingers after a July 7 fall from a hiking trail, arrived at Marietta Memorial Hospital early Monday, said the Rev. Mike Webber.
The student is being assessed for physical therapy and possible outpatient treatment.
Initially, Steele was scheduled to go to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus but has been recuperating more quickly than previously thought, according to Webber.
"It's just a continuation of her amazing recovery," he said.
Steele had been serving as a student ambassador through the People to People program in Scotland when she was injured and was originally thought to have broken her neck in the 24-foot fall.
Webber has said Steele managed to take her first steps in a body brace last week, despite a lot of pain and difficulty.
The community continues to raise money for the Steele family, with a spaghetti supper planned for 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Frontier High School.
A benefit concert is being planned for Sept. 13. For updates, visit www.helpmoriah.com.
Donations can also be sent to Peoples Savings Bank, Help Mariah Fund, 710 Second St., New Matamoras, Ohio 45767.
