NEWPORT TOWNSHIP - A 42-year-old man was found shot and killed outside his Bells Run Road home Thursday afternoon, sparking the second homicide investigation this week in Washington County.

Killed was Patrick E. Arnold, of 2410 Bells Run Road, according to police.

Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said police did not have any suspects as of late Thursday.

Arnold's body was discovered shortly before 1 p.m. by a neighbor.

It was unclear how long Arnold had been dead. A neighbor said he had not seen the man in at least a day.

Mincks said the body was being transported to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office for a forensic autopsy.

"We don't have anyone in custody, but we have a number of persons of interest we will be talking to," Mincks said. "Not that they are suspects, just people we want to talk to."

Prior to this week, the last homicide in Washington County came in November 2004 when a 12-year-old boy shot and killed his grandmother and aunt.

On Tuesday, Amber Wesley, 21, was strangled and killed at her Warren Township home. Her live-in boyfriend, Noal Quattlebaum, 22, is charged with her murder and is expected to be arraigned today in Marietta Municipal Court.

Also this week, a man was charged with attempted murder after police say he stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the back outside her New Matamoras home.

"What in the world is going on around here?" asked Carol Stevens, who lives across from Arnold. "This is starting to hit a little too close to home."

Her husband, Francis Stevens, 72, described Arnold as a hard worker who tended to keep to himself.

"It's been (Wednesday) or maybe the day before since I've seen him. Our mailboxes are all right together right there and I usually see him there," Stevens said.

Stevens said police should check with Arnold's employer to see if he was at work. It could help nail down a timeline, he said.

"He was a worker. If he was supposed to be at work, he would be there," Stevens said.

According to one of Arnold's family members, the man was divorced with no children and lived alone. He worked as a union millwright and owned several rental properties in the area.

"He was like me; he would work 24-7 if he could get by with it," said Bill Klintworth, a brother-in-law. "With Pat, there was always something that needed done."

Arnold was living in a mobile home that sat about a quarter-mile off Bells Run Road and was not visible from the road. A deputy sat at the entrance of the drive to block access.

At least 20 investigators, including three special agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification, were processing the crime scene.

Mincks refused to answer most questions about the crime scene, including how many times Arnold had been shot.

"We're still in the preliminary stages of our investigation, and I don't want to release too much at this time," Mincks said.

To answer your question... I 'think' he's meaning that NO **** the death is suspicious... it's an unsolved murder. Isn't that kind of redundant to label it 'suspicious'???

riveraux, I'm curious? What's not "right" with the story?

I worked with and for Pat in the last 8 years. He was a good person who would try to work out any problem. I will really miss him and hope law enforcement can find who is responsible quickly. My thoughts and prayers are with Pat and his family.

I love it. Headlines "death susipious". Only a reporter that can't get the story "right" would caption with that.

I understand what you are saying wayne, people who dont "pray" can have those same morals, and ethics and respect. And I sometimes take offense to those who think that people who believe differently about God, or those who dont have any believe in God are unethical, disrespectful and immoral.

And yes i TOTALLY agree parents need to excersize and teach thier children the golden rule, respect and morals and ethics. But i dont think prayer not being in school has anyting to do with it.

Ladynoogs, you are right, this will happen even in so called, I repeat, so called Christian Homes. Just remember, the people are wolfs in sheeps clothing like the idiot, Pastor James Jones, who along with his followers committed suicide down in the Country of Guyanna in 1978. These types of ministers are quack ministers and they do exist. Just remember, there are exceptions to every rule. A true Christian or a person of good moral background will not behave in this fashion and want the best for their children. I cannot add anymore to these comments as people will always believe what they want to believe anyway. Just remember, I have worked through two generations of people within my job as law enforcement and I feel qualified to make these comments.

Prayers to all, even the rest of us. Prayers that todays parents get on the ball and STOP making excuses for your kids and make them resppnsible with some values. The ME society willl kill us all.

Not only will parents have to teach values, they might even have to practice them themselves.

maybe you can't blame it on prayer being taken out of the schools, but it certainly didn't make things better now did it?! ladynoogs you would have to agree that kids today are different than they were say 20+ years ago. i'm not sure about you but when i was young i was taught respect for my elders, respect for the law, respect for the church, respect for my teachers, and most of all respect for my parents. i've tried to raise my boys with that principal and so far so good. said that we don't have all the details of this man's murder. let's pray for the families comfort in their loss.

i feel awful for the familes of all concerned and my thoughts are with them. Nikizimm and peppie i agree with you.

Wayne, I've personally know of at least 3 families who severely abuesed thier children that were considered "good Chrisitan" homes".

Out of the small circle of people i personally know 2 have been molested by different pastors in different churches in different states in different decades.

One severe case of child abuse where the child was almost died b/c her "Good Christian" father caught her wearing makup (the 80's). the church didnt do a darn thing about the abuse of this girl when her little brother repoported it to the pastor, didnt even call CPS. Heck he even got "promoted" after the fact.

it happens in every religon (or no religion), culture and society in every part of history. So you cant really blame it on "prayer being taken out of school".

After having grandchildren I have learned that the past is the past and I can't do anything about the abusive family life I grew up in, I can't do nothing about the abusive way I treated my children when they were small - all I could do was remove myself from the home and I thought that would kill me - then finally I knew the answer to the question......... I don't wnat my grandbabies to grow up and do the same things my entire family has done in the past - we led by example and I try everyday to do things better, different, HEALTHIER. Prayer for all concerned in the recent events - may God bless and teach then all to start making changes today so that their children don't grow up and repeat their mistakes.

Nikizimm, There are always exceptions to any rule. Of course, there will be a bad seed pop up every once in a while regardless of how the person is raised. I feel what I mentioned previously still holds for the majority. I think what happens is that these children, with the good families, may run with the wrong crowd while growing up and when they do so, bad things can and do happen. I still thank my father for raising me the way he did even though he has been dead since 1956. He thought me and my siblings values that we could not appreciate at that age, but as we got older we had though values to fall back on. I believe those values you are taught by your parents becomes more meaningful as you mature. At least it did for me. I guess we all have our own opinions on this. I was in law enforcement myself for many years so I do feel that I have had some experience in this area. Have a good afternoon.

Except for Mr. Arnold, who we don't know who killed him, the other crimes have been committed by people who have had run in's with the law before. Seems the punishment for these repeat offenders is not enough to want to deter them from continuing their life of crime. How a person is raised, does not always reflect on how they act as adults. What the person decides to make of themselves is their own decision. My punishment for these criminals, put them in the military where they can learn discipling and respect. I know someone will come up with saying that military life teaches violence, not so. Enough insanity pleas, make them face up to their responsibility's themselves.

I was Pat's insurance agent. He was a wonderful guy. I'm praying for his family. He was always working and had a desire to help people. I felt sick driving to work this morning after hearing about it on the radio.

Wayne I understand what you are trying to say but I have to say that you cannot blame the parents. I know of several "bad seeds" that had the home that you are speaking of, adn still grew up to commit crimes and get in trouble. As parents you can only do so much, but after they are raised they make thier own decisions and you have no say so in it anymore. We choose our path, not our parents and depressingly enough not everyone chooses a good one.

Blame it on the MEDIA...everyone else does...

Nikizimm, I think you answered this question in you own statement of what is causing these horrible crimes. My opinion as to the main reason this is happening is this: prayer has been removed from all public schools and public places, parents not teaching their children to be responsible while their children are growing up. Most people who believe in God and who have had a good up bringing in their formative years, would never commit crimes such as murder or any other major crime. I place most of the blame on the parents of these criminals for not raising their children in a more loving, decent and responsible home atmosphere. I know that some of you may disagree with me, but this is the way I was raised. I try to obey all laws and treat everyone I meet with respect. I still believe in the golden rule; treat others as you would have them treat you.

What the h*ll is happening to our community? A stabbing, and 2 murders in one week. I felt safer living in Columbus. And as much as people want to, you can't pass the blame onto law enforcement like we seem to be doing with the other murder case. All we have to blame is our screwed up society, and even more screwed up citizens. My prayers go out to all the people envolved in these horrific cases this week, and I hope all the screwed up souls causing all this mess gets what they deserve.
