Noble Co. inmate escapes briefly

By The Associated Press
POSTED: August 7, 2008

COLUMBUS - Authorities say a jail inmate slipped out of his handcuffs, reached over the back seat of a Noble County sheriff's van and overpowered a corrections officer who was driving on Interstate 70 to the Franklin County Jail. A two-hour standoff ensued.

Police say James Gillman, 27, grabbed a gun from Noble County corrections officer Ken Jackson, who was driving the van, demanded money and ordered the 68-year-old to drive him to a relative's house on the south side of Columbus on Wednesday afternoon. The van was traveling along I-70 near Brice Road when events unfolded around 5 p.m.

Jackson was the only law enforcement officer in the vehicle with Gillman. The vehicle did not have a cage protecting the driver from passengers.

Gillman had originally been arrested in Franklin County on a robbery charge, according to a report on the WBNS-TV Web site. Gillman had pleaded guilty to an assault charge in Noble County.

Gillman, who is 6 feet, 4 inches tall and 290 pounds, ordered Jackson to drive to a house in the 400 block of East Markison Avenue on Columbus' south side. Gillman fled into the house, police said.

Jackson flagged down a Columbus police cruiser, and SWAT teams surrounded the house. Gillman surrendered to police shortly before 7 p.m.

thecutlerkid, glad you laughed. Before you sound too smug I would suggest you take time to use your head. Have you ever seen those lock boxes at any jail? Know what they are for? All weapons go into them before an officer is to be around someone incarserated. Have you ever noticed that the officers in direct contact with prisoners never carry guns? Maybe you just did not know, but your smug attitude is rather funny when one knows the facts.

Harley Rider you made me laugh, "why is the officer armed around a prisoner" All officers transporting prisoners are armed DUH! the real crime is that the Sheriff allows the transportation of these individuals in a car without a cage. Basic Security is not too much to ask for. Another question is why is their a 68 year old corrections officer doing the transporting? Plain stupity on the Noble county sheriff. I don't care if the 68 year old looked like Arnold Schwarzenengger he has the reflexes of a turtle compared to a 27 year old. I know their has to be a younger certified officer that could do transports. As for the criminal it never fails that stupidty will prevail and thats why they are in jail in the first place.

Uhhh . . . what about shackles and chains . . . tighter handcuffs??? Perhaps Sheriff Landon Smith should implement some rules and regulations for transportation of prisoners. Think?

At one time someone probably asked for a cage, then someone said they cost to much, and we dont deal with that many bad people here, then someone said it's no big deal, then this happened, and now someone is saying it will probably not happen agin.

I am wondering why such a blantant disregaurd for security. First, why is there no cage? Second why is the officer armed around a prisoner?

This guy should be featured as on of the stupidest criminal around. He had a gun on a corrections officer and demanded to be driven to the exact house. Wow! Did he think nothing would be said or done? It was like he was hiding behind the drapes with feet showing a the bottom!
