Car collides with school bus

Head-on wreck sends boy in PT Cruiser to trauma center

A combination of speed and too many occupants in a car may have contributed to a Tuesday afternoon crash on Jennings Hill Road involving a carload of teens and a school bus.

Six teens in a PT Cruiser were transported to area hospitals following the 4:30 p.m. wreck.

Coty Adams, 17, of Whipple, was listed in serious condition this morning at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. The patrol listed Adams as a rear seat passenger in the car.

Driver of the car is listed as Brandon Payne, 17, of Marietta.

Others in the car, according to the patrol are: Jessica Handschumaker, 16, of Waterford; Jennifer Handschumaker, 16, of Waterford; Ryan Rivetta, 17, of Whipple; and Brittany Amage, 18, of Beverly.

According to Lt. Mary Pfeifer, commander of the Marietta Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, the PT Cruiser failed to negotiate a curve and struck Marietta City School bus No. 29 about a tenth of a mile from Ohio 26. Investigators this morning were still trying to sort out details of the crash.

No one on the bus, including the driver and two students, required medical transport. The bus driver, Beth Ann Page, was taken by a personal vehicle to the hospital to be checked out, Pfeifer said.

The bus was near the end of its route and had two special education students aboard, both age 9 or 10, said Dave Davis, Marietta City School transportation director.

"They just came over the hill way too fast," Davis said of the teens in the car. "If they hadn't hit the bus, it looks to me like they would have gone over the hill."

A solid set of skid marks stretching approximately 60 feet led from the top of the curve toward the bus.

The passengers in the car, most bloodied and bruised, huddled on the ground alongside the road and watched as the most seriously injured passenger was loaded into a squad.

"He's hurt real bad," one of the passengers, a girl, told her mother over a cell phone.

Pfeifer said motorists of all ages need to be aware school is back in session.

"Kids run to the bus stop and get off the bus and run home," Pfeifer said.

Prayers to all the families. Polk's Market in Whipple is taking donations to help Coty's family with travel expenses.

people grow up move on about this whole thing...its in the past. And as far as the writing on the windows its not shoes polish its window chalk and it doesnt have a factor in this. And the drinking thats noones business its the parents to deal with and not to be made public.

There has been no talk about drugs or alcohol being involved. Why do you keep bring that up? That has nothing to do with this accident.

Walk around the MHS (or other HS, I suppose)parking lot and notice the percentage of cars that have lettering ALL OVER the windows. (White show polish, I think??) Though perhaps not a factor in this accident, I fail to see beyond the hazards far enough to understand the fad.

Shyanna I am sorry about your sisters being in this accident, but I beleive this was your families car, you sisters made a mistake letting someone else drive the car. I don't think you can soley blame the driver, any one of them could have said we cannot have that many people in the car. They all have to be responsible for there actions. I will continue to pray for each and everyone of those kids and there parents just as i did last night when i heard about it.Not even knowing who any of them were Everyone makes mistakes hopefully they will learn from this. I am so glad it did not happen where one of your parents who are E.M.T.'s had to take care of any of them.

"Kids run to the bus stop and get off the bus and run home," Pfeifer said.

This comment makes no sense when you consider what we are reading in print.

I didn't read where a kid ran off the bus and into a car.

Every single one of these people has a lot to deal with, there for they don't need people pointing fingers at them and blaming them even if it is true. The main concern should be Coty, everything else can be sorted out later. -Please pray for him even if you do not know him personally.

jennifergrace, you've been granted another wigh.

Please preach the same story to your fiends so we don't have to read the same type of story again.

I've been down the same road. Lucky to be alive. God go with you as you share your wisdom.

harleyrider~ i was on my way to work! i go that way every evening to avoid the traffic due to the construction of widening RT 7. i have lived out in reno area my entire life. i know that road. i was a teen once and made stupid decisions and i am sure my kids will do the same. i was merely saying that where the wreck was (in the bend) will sneak up on anyone young or old!

jennifer, bancomics is right you certainly do not need to apologize. these things are called accidents for a reason. i didn't have my first "accident" until i was-guess what everyone-an ADULT.

What a bunch of nincompoops! This are teenagers! Who is any one here to say they are not good kids and to have he nerve to judge their parents! Kids will be kids and sometimes they learn their lessons the hard way. No matter what a parent says kids will try it any way. Any one who has children knows that. Last time I checked this is America and we all have the right to be out and about when ever we want to. Being out driving with friends is not against the law. No there should not have been so many in the car and they should have been more careful but that dose not make them bad kids. It simply means they made some bad choices. In stead of saying bad things why not be concerned over what they will deal with over this and pray for them and their families.?

To all of the families involved in this, I am so sorry. This was an accident, a terrible one. As for the grumping and fussing about teens, and parents that don't parent, and everything else that you complain about. I sure hope your background is spotless. My prayers to all involved.

Unfortunately, many kids choose to disobey the law (and their parents) and make bad decisions, from which they may or may not learn their lesson. One cannot monitor their teenagers 24/7, but trust that they have instilled values in them that they will use when tempted to do something that they know to be wrong. America needs to be praying for our youth, and not just condemning them. It is a terribly hard world to grow up in! Pray for all involved!

Jennifer,

There is no need to apologize to people on here. Just make sure that everyone in the car gets better and has learned from what has happened. Which I'm sure they have.

You guys have been through enough already and shouldn't have to worry about mindless asinine comments from people on a newspaper website.

Just laugh at them and remember that alot of these people get on here because they don't have anyone else who will listen to them.

hello. i was a passenger in this accident. yea i am a teen and sometimes i make stupid decisions. and yea, i am terribly sorry to the parents of the passengers and to my parents. we would all like to go back in time and change the situation but we can't. luckily god is with us all. no, my parents do not drink and run wild, they do disipline me and my sisters. this was one big accident, and i don't think anyone should be pointing fingers unless they were there and seen the whole thing. i give my best regards to all the people who have critized our lifestyles and thank you to the people who stuck up for us teens.

I read these comments and laugh hysterically at all of these so-called "adults" on here who have parenting their children perfected and have children who are perfect in every aspect of their life. (SIGH) God forbid their kids even think about getting in another car with a teenage driver!! That might result in them drinking alcohol!

WE have all made mistakes before that turn into accidents. This is no exception. I'm sure that the driver of the car would take it all back and learn from this traumatic incident.

All of you "adults" need to re-read your posts and realize that 90% of them are totally asinine childish comments that contradict what you are talking about.

It would hard to believe they did not know the road. That is where they lived. An expensive lesson to learn. They also need to learn their actions affect others. If you only hurt yourself, that is one thing, but if you hurt someone else, well, then you deserve some punishment. The view from the other side of the bars for a while and eating not so good food might just help a little.

I just want to say maybe instead of worrying about what the kids were doing or how many of them were in the PT Cruiser we should just pray they will all be ok. I am the Handschumacher twins Uncle. I don't agree with everything they have done, but you know what I have done things when I was a teenager that I'm not proud of. We all have to live and learn. I'm sure that all the kids in this accident have learnt a lesson. Let's just hope they all make it home! I am praying for all the families involved!

Coming from a family of bus drivers all I can wonder is how this must have been for the bus driver and her passengers. I can't imagine. I also hope this driver is fine and has had a chance to step back, along with the passengers and thank God they are okay.
