Grants go out to area counties

September 11, 2008
From staff reports

Monroe County will receive more than $1 million in state and federal funding, Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher announced Wednesday, while Washington, Morgan and Noble are in line for six-figure grants.

Monroe and Washington counties will each get $500,000 in Community Housing Improvement Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Development, of which Fisher is director.

According to a release from the department, the money can be used to fund home repair, rental rehabilitation, tenant-based rental assistance, down payment assistance, new construction, infrastructure installation/improvement, public service and planning activities.

Morgan County will receive $540,000 from the program.

Fisher announced more than $30 million in housing improvement grants Wednesday. Statewide, the grants are expected to assist 2,778 low- and moderate-income households, consisting of approximately 7,500 people, and leverage more than $27.6 million in private and public money, the release says.

Monroe County is also on the receiving end of a $300,000 Neighborhood Revitalization Grant for Summit Township, according to another release from the development department.

The money, and about $378,500 in other public and private funds it is expected to leverage, will be used to install playground equipment, a picnic pavilion, basketball court, nearly 1,500 linear feet of sidewalk, 20 culverts and 600 linear feet of culvert pipe, as well as replace a gymnasium floor and 37 windows, purchase a fire truck and pave an 11,520 square-foot parking lot and 27,508 linear feet of streets.

Also in Monroe County, the Village of Woodsfield receive one of 19 federally funded Water and Sanitary Sewer Program grants.

The program, administered by the development department's Community Development Division, will provide $448,900 toward a project to address inadequate water supply issues by installing approximately 34,050 linear feet of water line to connect Ruble Lake to the village's water treatment plant. The $897,800 project will assist 1,161 households, the state release says.

Noble County also will receive a Water and Sanitary Sewer grant in the amount of $408,500 to address total coliform bacteria in private wells of the Ohio 285 service area by installing approximately 25,200 linear feet of water line and a booster station. The total $817,000 project will assist 33 households, the release says.

A check for the grant was scheduled to be presented at a 10 a.m. ceremony today at the county commissioners' office, with several county officials and state Sen. Joy Padgett, R-Coshocton, on hand.

Morgan County also is getting a $264,200 Neighborhood Revitalization Grant that will be used to purchase a generator, install two sewer pumps and a 500,000-gallon storage tank for the water system, purchase components for a telemetry system and complete other infrastructure improvements in McConnelsville.
