Sallye Bom's father used to always share with her the famous phrase, "Come grow old with me, the best is yet to be," and now those are the words the Marietta senior lives by as well.

"With the aches and pains, you wonder sometimes," she said Thursday, with a smile. "But I just like to enjoy the age I'm in, day by day."

Bom was one of a record 192 senior citizens to attend the 12th annual Celebration of Age Conference Thursday at the Marietta Shrine Club, sponsored by Marietta Memorial Hospital's 55-Plus program.

Those attending heard from several speakers and enjoyed lunch, music and each other's company.

"It's really a day of fun and social time for our 55 and over community members," said Jennifer Offenberger, director of marketing and public relations for Marietta Memorial Hospital. "There is a lot of getting up and moving, a lot of laughter, and people seem to really enjoy it. They can just celebrate themselves."

Lowell resident Frank Stacy, 82, said his favorite part of the annual event is playing catch-up.

"I see a lot of old friends I haven't seen in a long time," he said.

Stacy has attended the conference nearly every year with his wife Marge, also 82.

"It's a day I look forward to every year," she said. "You hear a lot of thought-provoking ideas."

The theme Thursday was celebrating the classics, with posters of classic cars and rock 'n' roll records adorning the walls and speakers advising those attending on how to live one day at a time and how to keep growing as they age.

"I've never missed one," Bom said of the conferences. "They bring in wonderful speakers, and it's a great time of fellowship. It's a great day."
