Early results of C8 study coming Wednesday

By Pamela Brust, Special to The Times
POSTED: October 11, 2008

PARKERSBURG - Dr. Kyle Steenland, one of the three members of the court-appointed C8 Science Panel, will present three results from the first of 11 planned studies involving the possible effects of C8 on human health during a press conference on Wednesday.

"He will have three results from the first studies. There are numerous results within each of those studies," said Lisa Collins, public relations spokesperson for the panel.

The C8 Science Panel was appointed as part of the class action settlement of a lawsuit involving releases of a chemical known as C8 from DuPont's Washington Works. The chemical is used in the manufacturing of Teflon. The panel was appointed by the court and agreed on by the settling parties.

The panel is made up of Dr. Tony Fletcher of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Dr. David Savitz of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and Dr. Kyle Steenland of Emory University.

Brookmar Inc. was appointed by the Wood County Circuit Court as part of the settlement to conduct the C8 Health Project. Blood tests and medical histories were compiled from nearly 70,000 residents and former residents of the six affected water districts that were part of the lawsuit. The testing began in July 2005.

The science panel's assignment is to examine and analyze the health data collected by Brookmar to determine whether the data suggests C8 exposure is related to human health and disease.

Cardiovascular risk factors measured in the blood and cancer immune function, liver and hormone disorders studies were scheduled for release this year, according to the science panel's time line.
