McConnelsville man dies in fire

Smoke inhalation cited as cause of death; blaze began at wood-burning stove

November 29, 2008
From staff reports

A 21-year-old Morgan County man died Friday in an early morning house fire on Ohio 669 in Malta Township, authorities said.

Dustin L. Redmon, 21, was found dead of apparent smoke inhalation in the rear bedroom of the house owned by his father, Roger Redmon, 5138 North State Route 669, McConnelsville, according to a release from Morgan County Sheriff Thomas C. Jenkins Sr.

In the release, Jenkins says that when members of the M&M Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the Malta Township fire Friday, they found Roger Redmon in the road. He told them his son was still inside the house.

The house is said to be a total loss and there was no insurance, the release says.

Still under investigation, the primary cause of Friday's fire appears to be a wood-burning stove, Jenkins said. An investigator with the State Fire Marshal's Office assisted with the investigation.

Dustin Redmon's body was taken to Miller Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville. The American Red Cross is assisting the fire survivor.

It's the second fatal fire in Morgan County in the past three months.

Rodney N. Spencer, 49, died Sept. 24, at his 259 Dale St., McConnelsville, residence. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Fire and Explosion Investigation Bureau have determined the fire was intentionally set and a $5,000 reward is offered for information leading to the identification of the person or persons responsible.

Anyone with information about that fire is asked to call the bureau at (800) 589-2728. Tips may be called in to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office anonymous tip line at (740) 962-1369.
