Virginia Blosser has been living at Norwood Greene Apartments since January when she moved out of the mobile home in Lowell where she had spent the last decade.
"I went through four floods in that area, and my family finally convinced me to move here," Blosser said. "Now I have plenty of room with two bedrooms and a den, and there's no maintenance worries.
"My grandkids say they love to visit grandma's 'hotel,'" she said.
Blosser lives in one of 14 apartments that have been rented out since the 40-unit facility at 315 Colegate Drive, Marietta, opened to residents on Dec. 1.
On Thursday, officials with The Woda Group LLC, developers of the Norwood Greene project, met with federal, state and local representatives for a grand opening event.
"It's wonderful to see the way this project has been laid out, and it shows the quality of life that's available in Marietta," said U.S. Congressman Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio, following a tour of the three-story facility.
The Norwood Greene project received $400,000 in tax credits and $1.4 million in low-interest loans from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency.
Jeff Woda, who heads the Woda Group, noted that it took some time to get initial plans for the apartment complex off the ground.
"When we first talked about the project, there were some rocky roads to get over, but we finally got a chance to show the mayor and council what we wanted to do," he said.
Mayor Michael Mullen welcomed the project.
"As a community that has a large percentage of aging housing stock, it is good to see this 40-unit complex come to fruition," he said.
Linda Sue Pifer, who serves on the Marietta Disability Advisory Board, toured one of the facility's handicap-accessible units.
"It was pretty easy to get around, and there are support bars in the bathroom as well as a railing in the apartment building hallways to help people who have trouble walking," she said.
Pifer said alarm pull cords in the rooms of each unit as well as an intercom enable residents to call for help in case of an emergency.
Charlene Wray, vice president of Woda Management and Real Estate LLC, which manages the complex, said about a quarter of the Norwood Greene units are rented out.
Applications are being accepted. For more information, call (740) 373-4140 or toll-free at (866) 789-3929.

Crazy - by Section eight are you referring to HUD? Being "hud approved" jacks up prices on even the smallest dumps

It is nice to see a decent group of apartments in Marietta especially for the elderly and handicapped and its close to the Food Locker where they still offer delivery on groceries. This is great!!
