Officials stress safety and knowing the rules this holiday

Sales were brisk at Eagle Fireworks on Ohio 7 north of Marietta Tuesday afternoon.

"We're here all year-round, but this is Christmas for us," said employee Sandra Ashcraft.

Eagle sells both consumer-grade fireworks (firecrackers, bottle rockets, cherry bombs, etc.) and novelty fireworks (poppers, "snakes," sparklers and smoke devices).

While consumer-grade fireworks may be purchased in Ohio, it is illegal to set them off within the state. However, it is legal for Ohioans to ignite novelty fireworks items in the state, as it is in West Virginia.

Ashcraft said anyone purchasing consumer-grade fireworks at the store is required by state law to provide photo identification and sign a form that says they're taking the fireworks out of state.

Still, Dan Ritchey, chief of the Reno Volunteer Fire Department, said some consumer-grade devices are fired off in this area every year.

"We hear a lot of concerns about bottle rockets being fired and landing on someone's roof," he said. "People should use a little common sense when setting off fireworks. A single bottle rocket can travel at least 200 feet."

Ritchey also recommended having a fire extinguisher or bucket of water handy when using any type of fireworks.

Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said extra deputies will be on duty Saturday and likely will be responding to complaints about fireworks.

"We encourage people to be very careful when handling fireworks, and they should be extremely cautious when young or even older children are around," he said. "Light fireworks in a clear area, away from houses, dry leaves or grass.... And remember alcohol and fireworks don't mix."

Mincks said many accidents occur when people try to relight a firework that has not exploded or attempt to bundle several novelty fireworks in order to create a large explosion.

"It would be best if people just attended one of the official fireworks displays that are scheduled throughout the area," he said.

If this State Law is such an injustice to all you firecracker nuts out there, rather than rant here, contact your state representatives and get the law changed. The state legislators make the laws, not the cops. Personally, I think that if you want to enjoy the 4th by blowing some of your fingers off; then go for it. But don’t expect the tax payers to pay your medical bills.

It is utterly amazing that the sheriffs says deputies will be patroling looking for violators of the laws of Washington County ..I think my tax dollars have been spent on violators within the dept lately and find this to be acrock of bull. They will areest the innocent for nonsense and let the drug users go.

My sister call from WVa about buying fireworks. She said you can set them off in WVa but not sell them, so they come over here to get them. Crazy rules!

We live outside of the city and have always set off fireworks for years and years. There's no way to enforce that law. Our sheriff has other things to take care of!

The cops haven't got time to babysit people setting off fireworks. Fireworks have always been a part of July 4 celebrations. I know of several large family get together s on the fourth where the fireworks displays rival local city fireworks shows. All this anti-firework rhetoric is ridiculous!

I was amazed when I moved to Florida. You can buy all sorts of exploding fireworks here. And you still have to sign a waiver that states you will not set them off inside the State. LOL. This place sounds like a battle field several times a year. But I do enjoy watching everthinf.

I always thought this was a ridiculous law as well. What's also funny is to listen to the crowd conversations in the story an you know where the fireworks will be set off. I think the manufacturers have the best of this deal. That's why their prices are so much higher in states like Ohio.

I don't see anything wrong with letting off the firecrackers on the 4th. Let people have fun that day of the year anyway. Now when they were selling the M80's and cherry bombs that was a different story. Those were dangerous. I remember a kid in beverly getting his hand blown off by an m-80 along time ago.. But if they are let off only on the 4th. I have no problem if they are let off at a decent hour.

Fireworks in the hands of people have always worried and scared me. Young adults and teens have been letting off fireworks around here for over a week now. I agree, it is stupid to sell fireworks in a state where they are illegal. Like someone who lives in the state isn't going to lie about where they are set off. As for calling the police about fireworks being set off in your neighborhood, save your time. By the time the law gets here, the offenders are nowhere in sight. I have to go out in my yard every morning and gather up the remains of fireworks that end up in my yard.

I agree KikiD2! They know people will let them off in Ohio when they sell them. Then where is law enforcement when they are called with concerns of illegal fireworks being used? NOWHERE! They turn a blind eye to it even when they see that illegal fireworks are being discharged in a residental area! Quit selling them and get real!

This is just ONE of the dumbest situations~you can sell them and buy them but not let off~SO you can LIE and pretend you are taking them to PA or where ever......I have an idea.....either stop the sale of them and shut down the stores or make them legal or just sell what is legal in the state you are in. I am so sick of the NO common sense government BS.
