EXTRA: Heroin bust; Ohio budget; Swine flu

Staff and Wire Reports
POSTED: July 2, 2009

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR HEROIN POSSESSION:

Marietta police, Washington County sheriff's deputies and the Major Crimes Task Force on Wednesday arrested a Marietta woman who reportedly had 60 balloons of heroin concealed in a body cavity.

Stacy R. Thompson, 29, of 116 Harmar St., was charged with third-degree felony possession of drugs and remains in the Washington County Jail on $15,000 bond.

Thompson's vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Pike Street, according to a release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office. A exterior sniff by a canine indicated the presence of drugs in the car and a search revealed drug paraphernalia, the release says. Under questioning, Thompson reportedly admitted having the concealed drugs, which she removed at the jail.

STRICKLAND DEFENDS SLOTS PLAN:

COLUMBUS (AP) - Gov. Ted Strickland continues to defend his gambling proposal as a way to balance the state's budget and says Ohio is in company with many other states struggling with financial problems.

The Democrat said Thursday that negotiations with legislators continue. He and the Republican-led Senate have been at loggerheads over the proposal that would authorize slots-like video lottery terminals at the state's seven horse racing tracks.

The plan is estimated to raise $933 million toward the state's $3.2 billion projected deficit.

Strickland says he told lawmakers that the only other options are cuts or tax increases.

He did not directly rule out authorizing slots with executive order that would not need legislative approval.

OHIO CONFIRMS FIRST SWINE FLU DEATH:

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Ohio Department of Health has confirmed that a southwest Ohio man is the first person infected with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, to die in the state.

State health officials said Thursday that they are not releasing the name of the Butler County man who was described as in his 40s and who died at Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton. The hospital would not comment.

The health department says the June 29 death was the first one in Ohio linked to the pandemic strain of influenza. The health department says the patient had underlying health problems that may have contributed to his death, and health department officials cannot say what caused the death.

The state has reported 108 confirmed and six probable swine flu cases to date.

60 balloons is an impressive number. I think that I went to school with Stacy.

Freddy1, where on earth do you get your statistics from?

freddy1... check your facts... the swine flu is not new... its first round was in '76. It's nothing new, though it has been somewhat dormant.

freddy1, I doubt this lady cared if she died from a ruptured balloon. After all she's doing ******. More than likely she'll die of an overdose or something else. Don't understand people.
