World’s largest turtle at Oglebay Zoo
From local reportsWHEELING, W.Va. - "Crunch, the largest fresh water turtle in the world will visit the Good Zoo at Oglebay for four very special days - Aug. 6 through 9," said Penny Miller, director of the Good Zoo. "Crunch is an alligator snapping turtle who weighs 165 pounds and is over 150 years old."
Good Zoo members will get to see Crunch first at a member's only preview evening today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Miller said Crunch has traveled to 18 states and has helped educate over 2.3 million people on the perils facing turtle species worldwide. Crunch will be joined by several other species of turtles, some of them endangered, from the Good Zoo's own collection for a special "Turtles in Trouble" exhibit. "Also during Crunch's visit, we are encouraging our visitors to find all of the zoo's turtles by solving riddles on a scavenger hunt," added Miller.
While at the zoo, visitors won't want to miss the zoo's newest permanent exhibit - an 18 foot reticulated python. The python arrived in June, transported by the zoo's curator and head keeper, directly from its former home at the Bronx Zoo in New York. The snake is a 15-year-old female and Miller said it takes seven or eight people to handle her due to her extreme size and strength.
The zoo is open daily at 10 a.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5.50 for ages 3 to 12 and free for under age 3. Good Zoo members are admitted free.
