1 killed, 3 hurt in boating accident
Special to The TimesAn Ohio man died early Saturday evening from injuries resulting from a boating accident on the Ohio River near Hockingport in Athens County.
Three other men were injured in the accident. Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair identified the victim as Guy W. Unger, 24, of Logan, Ohio.
Unger was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital's following the accident where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, St. Clair said. A preliminary examination indicated blunt force injury as the cause of death pending a full autopsy by the West Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office, St. Clair said.
The accident is under investigation by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Sgt. Clyde Armstead said the accident happened about 5 p.m. Saturday when a boat carrying four people struck a houseboat tied up along the shore near Hockingport.
Armstead said two of the men, including Unger, were transported to St. Joseph's, one was lifeflighted to Huntington and one was transported to Athens. Their names were not being released Sunday, although Armstead said they were all adult males and Ohio residents.

I'm not surprised. People buy a boat, know nothing about the rivers, nothing about boat handling, and less about the rules; they only know that one needs a license and a life jacket. If it's not a marked "No Wake Zone", then it's a "do-anything-you-want" zone.

With the Sternwheel Festival coming up next weekend, I hope this will be an eye opener for all the boaters who will be out on the river next week end.
