Dogs get care: Newport man accused of animal cruelty
Humane Society helps animals found in squalorBy Evan Bevins, ebevins@mariettatimes.com

Five charges of animal cruelty have been filed against a Newport man accused of keeping more than 50 animals - and his mother - in filthy, unsanitary conditions.
Washington County Dog Warden Greg Sturm said five second-degree misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals were filed in Marietta Municipal Court Monday against Steven Sharp, 52, of 1815 Long Run Road, Newport. More charges are possible, Sturm said.
A week ago, Sturm, sheriff's deputies and humane officers found Sharp's 80-year-old mother, Dorothy Sharp, living in the Long Run Road house, where the floors and other surfaces were covered with nearly an inch of cat feces and urine. Lightheaded and disoriented, Dorothy Sharp was hospitalized and placed in the custody of Adult Protective Services.
More than a dozen cats were found in the house, and numerous others were located in a trailer on the property. Twenty-two dogs were taken from the property and placed in the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley's shelter.
Officials said the cats were euthanized because they had leukemia, which is contagious among felines. Other cats, that were not closed up, are still roaming the property, said Butch Morris, humane officer.
"There's probably still another 30 cats out there," he said.
Two more dogs that had been running loose were brought to the shelter by Sharp's brother, Craig, who owns the property. At least three more dogs there have not been caught yet, Morris said.
Most of the dogs taken by the Humane Society, however, were tied up, with no food or water available, authorities said.
Steven Sharp was previously charged with failure to care for an impaired individual, a misdemeanor.
There are no plans to charge Craig Sharp, Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said Monday, because his brother lived at the residence at least part of the time and was the one responsible for Dorothy Sharp.
Craig Sharp has been cooperating with humane officers, Morris said.
Shelter manager Steve Herron said that when the dogs first arrived, they had to be housed in a garage due to crowded conditions at the shelter. However, a rescue operation took 22 other dogs from the shelter recently, and most of the dogs from the Newport property had been moved into regular cages in the shelter as of Monday.
"They've all been able to get cleaned up and taken care of," Herron said.
Most of the animals have overcome their initial fear and are warming up to shelter workers and volunteers, Herron said, but some are still "skittish."
People in the community donated puppy food, laundry detergent, bleach and blankets after the shelter took the dogs in, Herron said. The shelter will always accept more dog food and detergent (not to mention cat food and litter), he said.
"We appreciate what the public is doing for us," Herron said.
There are other ways people can get involved, the shelter manager said.
"I always look for volunteers in the afternoon to come and walk dogs," he said.

Once again id like to point out that yes the womans case is private and the Times probably has little to write about on her. BUT, has anyone else noticed that this man is getting MORE charges against him and spending MORE TIME in jail for the animals than what he is for neglecting his own mother? If hitting him with all the charges from the animal cruelty is a way for the lawyers to put him away for as long as possible, then its a sad insight into our judicial system!

What ever happened to this: Woman in trouble over fawn Newport resident says her caring attitude, trust of officials led to criminal charges. Court date was 9/14/09. Did the State haul her off to prison in the dark of the night?

I can,t believe that they killed all the cats on the site because they had leukemia, were they tested by a blood test by a vet? They truth is that they had no room for cats, they care little about cats. they want donations to care for dogs and kill the cats.Animal cruelty is a sin and those to do this should have more then a fine.

Any child of this woman whom new about how she was living should be brought up on charges. This is a sad case and we will probably never learn much about the mother just pray she is getting the care she needs. Off the subject anyone reading about the boy who fell off bridge on Wtap, he sure has a angry father.

The womans condition is not allowed to be made public at this time. The only way the media has of keeping this case in the public eye is to keep mentioning the animals. The son's should all be prosecuted for what has happened to their mother and the animals.

Parrothead, I agree with you in part about the coverage on where things stand with the elderly lady. Reality is that it probably is a privacy issue and there is clear cut laws and avenues to take so that she is protected and cared for from this point forward. That is a very good thing. The bad thing is, there are NOT such clean cut laws and avenues for rectifing the situation with the animals. So those that are passionate about their care are certainly up in arms and hoping that the squeaking wheel gets grease with some sort of action. That being said, WTAP and Times is only doing what media does best/worse, and that is going after the story that sells papers and gets viewers. You got to love/hate them for it. LOL. If there were 2 plants that closed at the same time and one had 1000 employees and the other only 10 which one do you think would get the PRESS. It's a little like that I guess and something that will probably never change.

Parrothead...they probably can't release much information on the woman because of privacy laws.

Prayers for Mrs. Sharp. I hope that she is getting the care she needs and it would be nice to hear how she is doing if that isn't a violation of her rights. Thanks to those who are taking care of the animals. Now, it is time that our District Attorney to start fighting the good fight and stop making plea deals just to lessen their case load. I realize the budget is tight but too many folks have the feeling from past cases that they can get a deal because the DA is unwilling or lazy enough to just get a conviction on a lesser charge. The judges hands become tied when it is time to pass the sentence because of these deals. Lastly, when looking for an animal, please consider those at the Shelter. Our 2 dogs and 1 cat came from the shelter and are very good pets.

I love animals also, BUT this case is rediculous! Even on the day ot was reported on WTAP the animals got the majority of the air time. I actually had a person turn to me during the newscast and say, "Are the dogs more important than the woman?" Our local news outlets should be ashamed of themselves (as well as anyone else) for putting so much attantion into the animals and not the human being. Just today the TIMES as 2 articles about the animals and NONE about the woman. Pathetic!!!!

How "nice" of the brother to bring more dogs to the shelter. Where was he when it came to caring for his mother? There is no way that he did not know what was going on. I, too, am having a hard time understanding why all the attention on the animals and not the mother.

Parrothead: the woman has been taken care of. Society has processes in place for human assistance. The animals are the ones needing help now. Please help the humane society!

I like to think I have enough room in my heart to love and value both animals and people. But, let's be honest, there are some people that make it hard...not this poor little lady though. She deserves just as many prayers and good wishes as the animals. And I think I could even find it in my heart to feel compassion for the son who is obviously suffering his own demons.

Parrot - yes, some people do value dogs more than people. Values have become skewed.

Why is there more attention being given to the dogs than to the woman who was also living here and taken to the hosptial. Has society actually gotten to the point that they value a dog more than a human?
