Cougars drill Beallsville 33-12
By Mark DierkesBEALLSVILLE - Frontier's junior gunslinger Corey Fickiesen converted enough big plays to fill a highlight reel, while the Cougars picked off four Beallsville passes Friday night to win at Blue Devil Field for the first time since 1996.
The 33-12 triumph, which spoiled Homecoming festivities for Big Blue, was the fourth in five starts for coach Todd Bradford's crew and kept the Washington Countians in the Region 23 playoff chase.
Tyler Binegar shredded Big Blue's secondary for 154 yards and two TDs from his receiver slot, while Reid Tilton ran for two TDs and stood out defensively..
"We had a hard time hanging onto the ball," said Beallsville mentor Dave Caldwell, who had to replace eight starters on each side of the ball, "but we're young and learning how to put it all together. The hard work is going to pay off down the road."
The Blue Devils trailed 7-6 late in the half, but the first of four interceptions thrown by frosh QB Teryn Jarrett led to two Frontier TDs in the final 81 seconds.
The Cougars opened the contest with an 11-play march capped by Fickiesen's 17-yard TD run at 7:49. Tilton's PAT boot made it 7-0.
Beallsville, which crowned Homecoming queen Tori Jarrett prior to kickoff, found the end zone early in the second when junior receiver Jerrod Kinney pulled in a five-yard toss from Jarrett.
The nine-play series featured solid ground efforts from junior Logan Groves and sophomore Graham Dauch. The PAT kick sailed wide at 11:19 to leave it 7-6.
After the Blue Devils forced a punt, Binegar picked off pass at his 37 to set up Frontier.
Binegar hauled in a 35-yard strike to the hosts' 20, but Frontier needed a 4th-and-9 rollout by Fickiesen for 16 to move the chains to the three-yard line.
Tilton's TD at 1:21 created a 13-6 difference.
On the first play following the kickoff, Brandan Murphy intercepted to set up a late Cougar scoring drive from the Blue 44.
Fickiesen completed 4 of 4 passes on the drive, the final one an 11-yard spiral to Binegar with 21 seconds left in the half to help the Cougs to a 21-6 cushion.
Beallsville chewed up most of the third quarter with a 15-play drive capped by sophomore Brandon Heath's two-yard run behind blocks from Jonathan Pittman and Brandon Hudson. The bonus run failed to leave it 21-12 at 4:40.
Tilton's one-yard run on the ensuing series ended a 92-yard march with 10:34 remaining, as a 51-yard Fickiesen-to-Murphy connection moved the ball to the Devils' six.
Jarod Mellinger's block on the PAT boot left it 27-12.
Again, the Cougars intercepted on the first play following the kickoff with corner P.J. Kiggans pulling in a Jarrett aerial at his 10.
Bradford's squad marched 90 yards in 12 plays to sew up a rare win on Monroe County soil as Binegar was left uncovered on a 30-yard bomb from Fickiesen at 5:19.
Fickiesen rushed for 78 yards on 20 totes, while Murphy backed Binegar with 69 receiving yards.
Groves led the Devils with 46 yards on eight carries, while Dauch rushed for 37.
"We're learning how to win," said Bradford, who takes his much-improved 4-1 club back home Friday for a Pioneer Valley Conference test with Fort Frye. "We've done a much better job finishing games."
Mellinger, Pittman and Hudson had three sacks apiece for Big Blue, which hosts old rival Caldwell, Friday. Nathan Kinney and Taylor Kinzy also made big contributions on 'D' for the hosts.
