Man stabbed by would-be robber
MC student, 19, faces aggravated robbery chargeBy Brad Bauer, bbauer@mariettatimes.com

A Marietta College student was charged early Sunday with stabbing a local resident in an attempted robbery, according to police.
The victim, David Scheimann, 33, of 713 Greene St., was listed in stable condition Sunday evening at Marietta Memorial Hospital with wounds to his hands and stomach.
MC sophomore Thomas G. Robison II, 19, is being held without bond in the Washington County Jail on a charge of first-degree felony aggravated robbery in connection with the incident. He is expected to be arraigned at 1 p.m. today in Marietta Municipal Court.
Marietta Police Sgt. Greg Nohe said alcohol is suspected of contributing to the 2:30 a.m. stabbing. He said Robison, of Apple Creek, followed Scheimann home from a downtown bar.
"Scheimann was walking home along Greene Street and Robison was following," Nohe said. "When Scheimann reached the rear of 709 Greene St., Robison confronted Scheimann and demanded money."
Nohe said Scheimann refused Robison's demands, at which point Robison pulled a pocket knife and stabbed Scheimann in the stomach. One of the man's hands also sustained a severe gash as he attempted to defend himself.
"The injuries were very serious," Nohe said.
Scheimann was able to walk about 200 feet to Speedway, 100 N. Seventh St., where employees called for help.
Nohe said Robison was developed as a suspect after individuals at the college reported they suspected his involvement in the stabbing.
"He made contact with some people back at the college and indicated he had been in some type of altercation," Nohe said.
Marietta Police and Marietta College Campus Police located Robison at his dorm, 207 Fourth St., where he was taken into custody without incident.
Nohe said Robison was questioned at Marietta Police Department, where he eventually confessed to the stabbing.
Robison faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the offense.
Nohe said Robison has one known prior arrest, which was for drunk driving.
Tom Perry, director of college relations for Marietta College, said the incident is being reviewed.
"At this time, all I can say is that the college is cooperating with the investigation and our police department is helping in any way possible," he said.

Underage drinking is all but unavoidable, and it starts with the individuals who do it and their environment, then to the people around them who enable it; not businesses. It's also important to add that in most cases, it's harmless. Harm that does result is not because of the individual being underage (at least for 18-20 yr olds), but more so, just bad decisions that young adults should be capable of avoiding. Most importantly, consider that this incident did not even occur because of just alcohol. This was an unfortunate decision made by an individual who was known for being slightly antisocial to begin with. MC Senior probably could have worded her comments better, however, after having personal interaction with the individual, I can agree: he is not a comfortable person to be around for a lot of people. This simply sheds light onto the fact that he does have antisocial tendencies that most likely could have used attention before this incident. Hopefully now he will receiveit

The issue is not just about drinking, but, I'd like to reiterate that the liability is not to be held by any other person or establishment than the defendant. I saw specific mention of the LockerRoom has been made (which has been made into a very nice and safe bar over the past year or so). I am a recent MC graduate, and as far as specific bars go, there is not one that is more tolerant of underage drinking than another. The few times I've seen any hint of attempted underage drinking at the lockerroom, it's dealt with swiftly, properly, and safely. IsaacEastwood does a great job, and works in collaboration with local law enforcement on a frequent basis to ensure that his establishment is safe and legal. Unfortunately, the bars and owners become the scapegoat for some when incidents like this happen because it's easy for individuals to deflect liability away from anything close to them. The fact is the defendant was drinking before he was at any bar downtown, as confirmed by students.

While I apologize for my earlier comment being perceived as judgemental, I would like to say that I did not intend it to sound that way. I do not judge Tom Robison on his looks, appearance or any superficial aspect. I was simply trying to state that he was one of those people who said inappropriate things, and made inappropriate gestures, that as a woman, make you put your defenses up. I felt unsafe around him. That is no judgement of his appearance, or any other factor, aside from my personal experiences with him. I recognize that anyone "stumbling home from the bars" is not going to be at their best, but regardless of Tom's behavior, I would like to assert that MC has not lowered their standards in any way. Sorry for anyone I offended with my earlier comment but I was just trying to say I feel safer now that he is gone.

This isn't about a bar serving an underage patron alcohol. They went by the law. It's not about him being drunk. Most people who get intoxicated don't commit crimes. It's not about him being creepy, alcoholic, wealthy, smart, or a MC student. It's about him making an extremely poor choice to attempt to rob someone. And then compounding that poor choice by choosing to stab his victim when he refused to give him money. I hope David can fully recover and heal from this ordeal. I hope the young man who stabbed him gets a punishment to fit the crime and that he can be rehabilitated to become a productive member of society.

Sorry but the Locker Room takes as many precautions (maybe more) than most of the bars that the college goes to. These kids are away from home, some for the first time, and want to go out and party. That is no excuse for someone to stab someone walking home, no matter what the reason! I agree with the Mtta College student, there are people around that just make you nervous and most of the time you can tell when they are odd in a bad way. The college has a lot of things going on that we never hear because they don't want their reputation smeared. Most of the kids are nice and just want to have fun but do go overboard. This happens in all college towns. You can't blame just one bar or just one person especially if you are going on just gossip and have never been to some of these bars.

Goaskalice--So, if you're a murderer you must go to Yale, right? You're making quite a few generalizations for someone with a college degree. Perhaps you should have considered a liberal arts college.

It’s bad that Marietta has these issues. I hope David gets some real justice for what has happened to him. It must be a common theme for the Locker Room, what with all the stabbing incidents and all. “There starting to spread throughout the town!” Check Isaac Eastwood’s 09-28-09 8:16 PM comments “Hopefully he didn't get drunk at your bar before hand. Not to create a hate scene towards you but you should really clean up your bar and get the drug dealers and low lives out of there.”

Goaskalice - you are brilliant. So if you are drunk and staggering you must go to Marietta College? Any chance you go to another college, say WSCC? I personally would prefer to have ANYONE walking home than getting behind the wheel of a car. What's your degree in and where did you go to college?

Here is a bit of truth that you may or may not find eye-opening: Underage drinking happens. In Marietta, at every bar, every weekend, guaranteed. As a recent graduate of Marietta College, it would be absolutely ridiculous for me to claim otherwise; yet whether this issue alone was enough to affect this man's psychology in such a way that would yield a criminal result is unknown. I personally do not believe that one can point to any single factor and name it as the primary cause. This event says nothing about campus life at Marietta College or the community at large except that they - as much as ANY community - are just as vulnerable to sporadic fits of crime. My heart does go out to Mr. Scheimann in hopes of a speedy recovery and a chance at justice.

To everybody on here that is bashing on this young man, you are just proving to EVERYBODY how ignorant you really are. There are two sides to every story. Since alcohol was involved there's no way to truly tell what happened between those two men unless you were a witness. And if you were, why didn't you do anything about it. You are just as guilty then. If you look at the picture of this young man and think that he is messed up on something or anything else, you are really dumb and ignorant. It looks as if this young man is really upset and realizes that this will affect him forever. This has nothing to do with Marietta College, so there is no reason to talk down on the college. It happened off campus and it deals with the city police.

Tom, Wish you were interested in protecting the students as much as the college image. Search the guys room for drugs, contact his parents, get him into detox and mental help, do not let him back on campus period. The town should prosecute the bar that served this kid until he was crazed into madness whether this was a one-time event or not. His parents if he has any need a reality check and to stop signing the checks. I give your son credit for confessing.

I am an owner of a downtown bar in Marietta... I can assure you that from our standpoint we do not tolerate underage drinking. We do allow 18+ in our bar (as it is perfectly legal) but we also mark them at the door (as we do have a door girl checking id's) as well as have someone walking around taking note on what's going on on our busier nights. Underage drinking has zero tolerance at my establishment... now as for them sneaking it, not much anyone can do but take precautions (door girl, floor person) but otherwise... yeah, that's how it goes (I own the Locker Room by the way). As far as David, we've worked together, he is in my prayers, and I can tell you he's one of the nicest most sincere gentlemen you would ever meet. I have nothing but kind things to say about him and I hope he is alright. He is in my prayers. God bless him.

Lumberjack- Well said. I wonder how MC Senior's friends look when they're staggering out of a bar after a night of underage drinking. The facts of the story are that a student committed a stupid, senseless, violent crime. If this crime would have been committed by a Marietta Memorial employee, or a similar agency, would we be asking if their hiring standards had been lowered?

This is a terrible situation. No question. What really shocks me though is the number of people who have been making judgements about this guy because of the way he looks, or because the college supposedly lowered its standards. Newsflash: smart people do dumb things too. How would any of you look after a night of drinking and then staying up all night being interrogated by the police. Who cares what he looks like. He confessed. Let the courts do their job and quit judging. Imagine if people decided how good of a person you were by the way you wrote. Most of of these comments would 'prove' that you must be a bad person who just hasn't been caught.

MC Senior- I am in no way defending this kid, and he deserves any punishment he gets. But you are just spreading gossip and stirring the pot by saying someone creeps you out, and you consider them dangerous because of the way they LOOK at you. Gee, I hope you don't look at someone the wrong way, maybe you'll be labeled a criminal. People should be evaluated on their actions and words, and in this case his actions have condemned him, rightly so. But for you to judge someone because they look or act "off" is just wrong. I notice you didn't claim to know of anything specific he did before, just that you and your friends consider him "creepy".

Because many of you seem to be wondering...this kid is just "off". As a female student at MC, he has made me feel uncomfortable and unsafe MULTIPLE times. It's just the way he looks at you that makes you wonder what he's thinking...it's really creepy. Personally, I am glad that he is now in jail, and I hope that he is never allowed back on Marietta's campus...I know I will feel safer because of it! Many students at the school also felt he was dangerous, and to most this news isn't shocking. It's sad that it comes to this before anyone does anything about a student like him. I wouldn't for one second blame this on alcohol....there are many drunk students that walk back from the bar every weekend....this kid would have done this same thing sober!!! Alcohol is not an excuse, and I hope that it is not considered a mitigating factor when he is sentenced. -And as a sidenote, EVERY bar in Marietta has served my friends underage, and it is definitely something that needs to

No no, folks. He was just spanked as a child. Apparently that lowers your IQ. (Note my sarcasm) Just because the boy was charged with a DUI prior to this incident doesn't make him a habitual offender. How many of you have had a few drinks with dinner and drove home? One beer can put you over the limit. I'm not supporting this little turd by any means, but don't jump to make assumptions you know nothing about. The boy committed a crime and he'll pay for it. End of story.
