More gun permits issued

How concerned are you about increased restrictions on gun ownership?
Very concerned Somewhat concerned Not at all concerned

A growing number of area residents are putting a gun into a holster or a purse as they gather their keys and wallets and prepare to leave their homes.

Since 2004, law-abiding Ohioans who complete a 12-hour safety course and apply for a concealed carry permit have been allowed to carry a gun that is tucked away out-of-sight.

Approximately 1,000 Washington County residents have such a permit. More than half of those permits have been issued in the past year. Statewide, the statistics are similar.

Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said the demand for concealed carry permits is fueled by concerns of more restrictive gun control. He said most people believe if they have a permit prior to any law change, they may be entitled to keep their permit.

"It's a general concern across the nation that there may be some political possibilities of more regulations on handguns," Mincks said. "It isn't just permits. People are buying guns and ammunition. For a lot of guns it is even difficult to find ammunition to buy right now."

Mincks said there are still some who want to carry a gun for protection. Since the law allowing hidden guns went into effect, he said there has been no incident locally involving a permit holder defending himself.

"I support concealed carry 100 percent," Mincks said. "We have not had any problems with the people from this county."

Carrying a gun in plain sight does not require a permit in Ohio.

Marietta resident Colin Boker, 23, said he hopes to get into a concealed carry class in the near future. He said he worries about laws being changed that would prevent him from carrying in the future.

"I think gun regulations is more of an issue for states to decide and the federal government should stay out of it," he said.

Boker said he wasn't sure how often he would carry a gun; but that he thinks he and others should have the right to carry. He said concealed carry is preferred because most people don't want to draw attention to themselves or advertise they are carrying a gun. Also, he said would-be wrong-doers are less likely to cause trouble if they don't know who might be carrying a gun.

In 2004, 342 Washington County residents were issued a concealed carry permit, which is good for four years. In 2008, 228 new permits were issued and 272 renewals were granted. Since January, 305 new permits have been issued in Washington County and 45 renewals were granted.

Through June, 158,000 Ohio citizens were licensed to carry handguns, according to Buckeye Firearms Association.

No major gun laws have been adopted or considered since President Obama took office.

Remember this the countries that enacted strict gun laws and then took the guns away from the citizens have went down in history for the most genocide. Germany, Russia, China. They killed millions because the millions could not defend themselves. Hey some of those countries are the ones that our present administration is patterning themselves after.

I am surprised here. No one has asked the question, since the carry law went into effect in 2004 has the crime rate gone up or down?

I am in favor of the carry law and I am a card carrying member of the NRA. I also feel that bad guy out there does not know if the person he is going to attack has a gun or not and that is a good thing. It tends to keep the crook more honest.

Isn't there something terribly wrong in a society where half the people have to go around packing heat to take the cat to the vet, go fishing, or just plain shopping. I never thought I would see it approach anywhere near that bad.

Time will tell, hopefully people accidently shooting themselves won't out number robbery, felonious assaults and murders foiled. Be safe, remember a gun don't give a second chance. Once that cap is popped it can't be took back.

I've toyed with the idea of a permit. A paradox that will always be is if I strap a .22 pistol or a .45 auto on my hip for all the honest world to see that would create a big stir. Yet if I get a carry permit and put that same gun under my coat then no one worries. I know one fellow who used to conceal his .32 down his pants. I always questioned that if the gun had accidently discharged it might have left him singing tenor. Weight is a concern, lugging a heavy piece with multiple vertabrae damaged and internal hemorroids is a problem. For me a pearl handled .32 derringer would probably be a good choice. The only thing worse than ever having to use a weapon to prevent death or serious bodily harm is needing one and not having one available. In real life and attack you would be lucky to get your hands on it first, if they want you bad enough they can always shoot you in the back or come up behind you and slit your throat or something. So having a weapon won't always help, but it might.

I am for the concealed carry law. I believe in that saying, "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". In my personal opinion, it is only right that a person can defend their family and property from criminals. As I have said before, a criminal may walk onto my property, but they can plan on being carried off my property. I have worked to hard for what little I own and no one has any rights to take it from me.

A BIG thank you to Larry Minks for pointing out the facts. The Government of Switzerland actually gives every home owner a gun and trains them to use it. As a direct result, their crime rate is the lowest of all civilized Countries. History shows that when a Society gives up their guns, crime runs rampant.

"No major gun laws have been adopted or considered since President Obama took office."

There is some kind of Pandemic with the ammo...Places can't keep it on the shelf and people are stocking up like crazy...I know I can only afford to buy a box or two at a time when I can find it...I dont know what Obama's plans are, but I think he has other things to worry about rather than taking our guns and ammo away...

"No major gun laws have been adopted or considered since President Obama took office". OH really? What about Illinois DEMOCRAT Blair Holts Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009? Anti-gunners are resorting to the courts now to take away our gun rights. Big Supreme Court case today because CHICAGO of all places don't want citizens to protect themselves. Chicago lost the Olympics and I hope these low lifes in Chicago lose this one too.

Wow, citizens taking personal responsibility and control of their own safety. I love it!
