Citywide Wi-Fi will have to wait
Vacant city wireless administrator position has yet to be filledBy Sam Shawver, sshawver@mariettatimes.com
It's been more than a year since Marietta City Council approved $23,850 to provide a wireless network that would link city offices, as well as establish Wi-Fi "hot spots" at locations like the Marietta Aquatic Center and Ohio River levee where people could tap into the Internet with laptop computers.
But on Tuesday Marietta safety service director Chad Presley told council's special utilities committee that while the city offices are now linked, the Wi-Fi hot spots will have to wait.
"The first phase of the wireless project was to hook up city buildings, and that's done," Presley said. "The next phase was to hook up the hot spots, but (city network/wireless administrator Mike Flesher) left to take another position, and we have not replaced him. We have the equipment, but it will remain on the shelf until we hire a replacement."
He said Scott Steinel, the city's hardware and software administrator, is currently able to meet all of the city's information technology needs, and with city revenues down, the administration had decided not to hire a replacement for Flesher until absolutely necessary.
"The money for that position (approximately $30,000) will go back into the general fund at the end of the year," Presley said.
Councilwoman Kathy Shively, D-at large, said she understood the city's financial situation, but was concerned that Flesher was not being replaced sooner. Councilman Tom Vukovic, D-4th Ward, agreed.
"We have budgeted for that position, and it should remain filled," he said. "I feel we're losing a public service (by not providing the hot spots)."
"I'm not saying we don't need that position, but right now we're able to limp along without it," Presley said.
"But we bought that wireless equipment for the hot spots, and now it's sitting on a shelf," said Councilman Jon Grimm, R-3rd Ward.
Councilman Harley Noland, D-at large, recommended the administration provide council members with a list of decisions made each week which would facilitate better communication.
"We want to be apprised of any decisions so we can answer constituents if any questions come up," Noland said.
Presley agreed to provide that information.
In other business, the committee members agreed to continue allowing Marietta College and Washington State Community College to use two of the city's three available cable access channels for learning opportunities and to broadcast City Council meetings and public service announcements.
Also on Tuesday, council's streets and transportation committee agreed to apply for a $7,000 Ohio Department of Public Safety grant for a traffic study at the intersection of Third and Putnam streets.

I definitely wouldn't give up my DSL connection for city WiFi. I can see it now, 50 years from now someone opens up some boxes in an old storage room and finds some new antiquated hardware that was supposed to make the city WiFi.

Let's keep an eye out to see if this money gets put on the shelf or gets spent somewhere else. Probably wireless service at the bricked area around the Armory. Won't be inside.

The internet and cable companies stand to lose a LOT of money if free wireless is given to the citizens. Any more questions why this is delayed?

Just go to the high school and ask a kid who wants to make $500 bucks. I bet he has it up and running in no time.

Why do all of the mayor's big projects end up sitting on a shelf somewhere? How long has he bragged about making the city wireless? Sounds like another scheme he is unable to fulfill.

Council a few months ago authorized Administration to hire a "special projects engineer." They hired someone to complete overflow projects that the city wanted done. I believe it was an 18 month contract paying a salary of $68,000. That totals $102,000 for 18 months. Filling the empty position mentioned in this article at 30k a year would have given someone a job for 3 1/2 years.

The mayor and service director like to keep the council members in the dark about problems with city projects so the citizens won't be told anything when you ask a council member a question. They need that money that was in the salary account for this position in the general fund which is short of money now. They could hire one of mullens buddies like they did for an ass't. engineer. What Crock does is not mentioned any more and how much money he has saved the city is not known. No one at city hall has given the public any information about how much the new swimming pool made this year. It would be alot less if they had to pay for the water and sewer service. LETS KEEP THE CITY FINANCES ABOVE BOARD AND KEEP COUNCIL INFORMED. Presley is not an elected offical to make policy about when a new employee should be hired.

Rather than have the hardware sit on the shelf why don't we have whowever was going to install it, just install it. If it was Mr. Flesher than use what is left of his salary to pay a contractor to install. Many local contractors I am sure can do this. Mr. Steinel should be able to configure the software or pay another contractor if needed. Just don't let the hardware sit and Mr. Fleshers remaining salary not be used. We have all ready spent the money on selecting the right hardware to work with what we have so lets just finish the job.

Is Scott Steinel any relation to Larry Steinel who has been accused of wiping out his computer when he was a commissioner? Wouldn't that be quite a coincidence?
