Early voting deadline at noon Saturday

By Ashley Hill, ahill@mariettatimes.com
POSTED: October 29, 2009

Registered voters who want to avoid the Election Day crowds have until noon Saturday to vote early.

The Washington County Board of Elections, located in the county courthouse at 205 Putnam St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday for voters to cast absentee ballots. Early votes can also be cast there from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Election Day is Tuesday.

Early voting began Sept. 25 and by the close of business Wednesday, approximately 2,950 people had taken advantage of it.

"If people's plans change or something comes up spur of the moment, it (the voting) is taken care of. You don't have to worry about it on Tuesday," said Peggy Byers, Washington County Board of Elections director.

In recent years, all registered voters have been eligible to vote early. This wasn't always the case.

"You used to have to provide a reason, like you were going to be out of town, but that changed in 2006 and now anyone can vote early," said Byers.

Lowell residents John and Elizabeth Rubrake decided to vote early Wednesday. Although she was not able to cast her ballot because she did not have proper identification with her, Elizabeth Rubrake said she likes the process overall.

"I'm glad you don't have to give a reason anymore, and people are taking advantage of that," said Elizabeth.

There is one race that John Rubrake has been watching closely.

"The Fort Frye Board of Education race brought me out to vote," said Rubrake.

While people can still cast absentee ballots at the board office, Byers said it is too late to mail ballots in and voters will not be given ballots that do not belong to them.

"We can't hand a ballot to someone to be given to someone else," she said.

For those voting on Election Day, polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Vote YES on the MCS Bond Issue

While the funding of schools in Ohio has been found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL 3 different times since the mid 1990's, our state leaders have done nothing to properly fund our schools. What makes you think that anytime within the next 37 years they will act to do so? Besides, by the time the tax expires from the tax rolls, we will both be long dead. At least you can go to your grave with a peace of mind that you as an individual did everything you could to properly fund your local school when your state reps stood by and did nothing because it was the safe thing for them to do to get re-elected.

Vote YES on the MCS Bond Issue to move Marietta into the 21st century and out of the 20th century.

Vote NO on the MCS levy!

It is not well planned or thought out and the board members have mislead and misinformed the public about it.

The funding for education in the state of Ohio has been ruled UNCONSDTITUTIONAL!

The legislators are supposed to be changing the system that we now use. You can bet that will be done before the 37 years of this levy have expired so WHY WOULD YOU TIE YOURSELF TO 37 YEARS OF UNCONSTITUTIONAL SCHOOL FUNDING?

Stop throwing good money (that we do not have) after bad money!

Vote NO on the MCS levy

Parrothead...

You are wasting your time talking on this forum about consolidating all the schools of Washington County into 1 district. State law requires that each school district to have it's own Board, Superintendant and Treasurer. You need to talk to your state reps about changing the law, that is if you are serious about doing it. Until the state law changes, nothing will change. Until the state properly funds education in Ohio, it will be left up to the voters to locally fund their own schools. If you have a better idea, come forward and run locally or statewide for an office and make a change instead bantering on a local website that cannot effect change.

Vote YES on the MCS Bond Issue and fund schools properly because the state isn't going to do it for you.

Vote NO on the school levy!

Asknot it is ludicrous to think about approving a mistake and THEN fixing the problems! Fix the problems first and then give them the funds they ask for.

Vote NO on MCS levy!

Vote NO on the school levy!

It is a waste of money. New buildings will do NOTHING to improve the education received by our children! This money would be better spent on improving materials and teachers pay. Better pay will attract better teachers and a good teacher can give a child a good education in a cave!

The school board is NOT consolidating the buildings to one campus in fact the High School is proposed outside of the city limits at the end of Mill Creek Rd. Then there are no plans for practice facilities there for the sports or band. Also no auditorium so students involved in these activities will have to be transported back and forth.

This levy is for 37 years people 37! In the year 2046 students will likely not even be going to central school facilities but instead learning at terminals in their homes.

If we vote to consolidate something make it be all of the school boards in Washington County. Now that would be some savings!

Vote NO on MCS levy!

I encourage everyone to get out and vote too. Make sure you read up on the casino. It sure seems like we should vote this down. It will handcuff the state and give all the power to the casino's. Vote No on casinos!

Vote YES on the school proposal, and help get our education system and the community. Next, get involoved and make the school board accountable, get it streamlined, and improve the curriculum.
