Marietta inherits a windfall
By Sam Shawver, sshawver@mariettatimes.comAn unexpected $271,000 windfall from Marietta's inheritance tax will give the city's general fund a much-needed boost, according to City Auditor David Locke.
"It will help make up for some slack in the general fund this year," he said. "We only projected $55,000 from the inheritance tax in the 2009 budget, but prior to this recent payment we already had $187,000, so this brings the total to $458,000."
Locke announced the windfall during city council's finance committee meeting Monday.
Finance chairman Andy Thompson, R-at large, said it was a surprise.
"We had no idea that much would be coming in," he said. "I knew there had been a large estate settlement, but didn't expect anything to come in at this time.
"It's a pleasant surprise that will help us build a healthier general fund," Thompson added.
In other business Monday, Marietta Fire Chief Tom Dempsey asked for council approval of a total $10,175 from a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant to pay for gloves, boots, and a high-tech fire extinguisher training unit that would be used to help teach the public how to properly aim an extinguisher in order to put out a fire.
Dempsey said the unit uses lasers or water and produces no smoke, so it could be used indoors to train staff at nursing homes or schools.
Also on Monday, city engineer Joe Tucker requested $31,000 from energy loan funds to complete the first phase of energy-saving upgrades to city buildings at 301 and 304 Putnam St.
He said $6,000 of that money would go for a change allowing Swiss Valley Associates of Sardis, contracted to perform an energy audit on municipal buildings, parks and other facilities, to submit applications to American Electric Power for energy rebates estimated at $29,524 for the city.
"AEP is mandated to provide for energy efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, and this is how they're doing it," Tucker explained. "We can also receive a retroactive rebate from the installation of LED lighting in our traffic signal lights earlier this year."
Tucker said the other $25,000 he requested from the energy loan fund would be used for any contingencies that might crop up as the first phase of the energy conservation project is completed by mid-December.
The initial phase includes an upgraded HVAC system, window replacement, energy-efficient lighting, and computer server improvements at 301 Putnam St., and window replacement and improved lighting at 304 Putnam.

Now we can but the Auditor, David Locke so he can keep track of the money properly. Now the citizens will know where mullen spends all the money for stupid projects that benefits no one. Rebuild Front Street so they will have parking for the buses at the Armory. No business plan for the Armory or the City of Marietta.

"The Death Tax hits big again! Let's all celebrate how Marietta has hit the lottery by taking someone else's hard earned money and gets to go on a spending rampage! Watch how many people have their hands out for this and see how the windfall is spent!" How well said!!

Most relatively simple estates (cash, publicly traded securities, small amounts of other easily valued assets, and no special deductions or elections, or jointly held property) do not require the filing of an estate tax return. A filing is required for estates with combined gross assets and prior taxable gifts exceeding $1,500,000 in 2004 - 2005; $2,000,000 in 2006 - 2008; and $3,500,000 effective for decedents dying on or after January 1, 2009. Perhaps this person did not care if their heirs got any money.

wildflower, I read about the boots and gloves also. And I understand this is all fire equipment. But $10,000 for boots, gloves, and a "high-tech fire extinguisher training unit" sounds a little expensive to me. I'd think it would be cheaper to use a real fire extinguisher.

@rocker I have no idea where you got the fire extinguisher was to cost $10,000. Read the story again. I just love people who comments with out reading. It says that would also include boots gloves etc. Remember these are fire gear not what you go to wallmart and buy.

Thank God I got out of there long ago. Another " tax"? If I tried that stunt, I would be indicted on fraud and racketeering charges, just to name two, who knows what degree felony that would be invented. Marietta seems to be cutting it's own throat, while wondering why it's starving.

After finding out about this "inheritance tax" I'm going to get my parents to move out of Marietta. These tax leeches*****your pockets dry when your alive and now even after your dead. And to spend $10,000 to buy a fire extinguisher to "teach the public how to properly aim an extinguisher in order to put out a fire"is absurd. What the H are these people thinking????

Wow! What an inheritance for Marietta. I'm sure the deceased didn't know it would go to the city.

Indian, Parrothead, Lizard....wonder what happened to Heidi Laughery's trial in West Virginia for embezzlement? Maybe the city could rename the Armory...Heidi's Place, and then shower it with the inheritance tax.

Must have been a pretty big estate, the city only get a little taste. If they throw that to the armory, everyone who votes for that should be impeached from office. Time for citizens in Marietta to stand up.
