Thursday's shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, shocked people in communities across the nation, including folks in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Nancy Matheny, activities director at Marietta's O'Neill Senior Center, said her son, Capt. John Matheny resigned his commission with the U.S. Army earlier this year, although he is still a Reservist.

"John was stationed at Fort Hood, but he's now living in Kentucky," she said. "(Fort Hood) is the largest military reservation in the world - it's like a city, but it is just unbelievable that something like this would happen there.

Nancy had not talked to her son since learning of the shootings, but said soldiers who serve together are a close-knit group, and John would likely have known some fellow soldiers stationed at the Texas base.

"I would be berserk if he was still stationed there," she said. "And I can't imagine how worried those families (who have sons or daughters stationed at Fort Hood) might be."

Lowell resident Frank Thomas had just returned home around 6 p.m. Thursday and heard about the shootings on the evening news.

"Fort Hood is the main shipping in and shipping out facility for troops headed to Iraq," he said. "They said the shooter was a major in the Army.

"I think the trauma and stress of being under fire affects these men," Thomas added.

Joe Nicholas, commander of American Legion Post 159 in Williamstown, said coverage of the shooting was all over the televisions at the post Thursday evening.

Nicholas said he at first wondered about security at the base but noted that the attack came from a fellow soldier.

"You kind of don't look at your own like you do an outsider," he said. "It's kind of sad that we're coming to this that we can't trust our own people."

Nicholas, who served in the Navy for 20 years, said soldiers have to fight next to one another and often share close quarters, so they develop trust.

Marietta resident Barb Handschumacher, who served in the Army as a medic in the Vietnam era, said she always felt safe at military bases. She was never stationed at Fort Hood, but did serve at Fort Sam Houston, also in Texas.

"I was just shocked and very surprised that it could happen on an Army base," Handschumacher said of the shooting. "My first thought was for the parents of the young men (who died)."

Evan Bevins contributed.

The problem with things like this is hind sight is 20/20. People are scared to say anything about their superiors especially in the military. I know I reported several superiors in a chain of command for something they should not have done and when it got swept under the rug payback came back on me ten times. The people he shot were under his pay grade, he committed fratricide. People are afraid of being labeled as a racist if the say the wrong thing about someone who might be doing something like this guy. Liberals have a bad habit of doing this to deflect the blame from where it belongs. If someone had reported this to the FBI and then this guy would have been arrested the liberals would have decried racism and you were violating his right to free speech. It is a double edge sword. God bless these soldiers for what they do and may they rest in peace.

WORKINGSTIFF & bwc511 - You are the same people who scream that the current administration is destroying the Constitution and then you turn around and want to violate the rights of other American citizens in the name of a false since of security?

What words would you use to describe these thought patterns or ignorant people who think this way?

Some things have not changed, obviously. Some commenters that flit around this paper's site haven't grown out of the elementary grade level of not being able to make it through 3 sentences without going snide and ad hominem. Armchair psychoanalysis (what we "like") followed by insults (ignorant, stupid) on an anonymous website is why some names don't even get a glance anymore. Over and out.

Parrothead, during WW2, we Americans put the Japanese in concentration camps after Pearl Harbor, so why shouldn't we do the same with Muslims today? Why not? It makes perfect sense. We could ship them offshore to avoid the Constitution.

WORKINGSTIFF – You should really be writing fiction for a living because you have one active imagination. I bet you could write a really good conspiracy novel. Like anyone outside of the Mid-Ohio Valley gives a rats behind about the Mid-Ohio Valley.

Is your real name Glenn Beck? You like to try to instill fear in people like he does.

rotflm ao!!!!! :-)

It was coming.... a horrific sneak attack by an islamofascist on American soil. It could have been a school just like the Russian school massacre at Beslan. Imagine Williamstown Elementary. Or a big hotel like in Mumbai. Imagine the Blennerhassett. Or a market street like in Israel. Think Grand Central Mall or South Side Wal-Mart. They could capture any American, go to some secluded place, film as they cut off his head and get it on YouTube... like Daniel Perl. Watch it if you want to see evil walking on two legs and sacrificing a human to a false idol... it is medieval...but it is reality... here and now. That is "hate" and "racism" and warmongering...not America! There is no excuse for it.

The headline should read "Terrorist attack on American troops in garrison". And what does the "fact box" try to imply? Those other murders were not carried out by a man of Palestinian descent shouting allahu akhbar, who had a history of posting anti-American/pro-islamist propaganda on websites, or one who was already under observation by the FBI. No PTSD. No excuse. He's a Koranite ....and a very well-educated one at that. The big question is: Where are the next suicidal islamofascists hiding and what are we doing to rat them out??????

How bout we call him a murdering cowardly piece of scum who should have been stripped of any military garb years ago & dishonorably discharged from the military when he started spouting his garbage a long time ago.

This attack by this muslim, yes I am calling him a muslim, is another part of the terrorist attacks happening in this country. This seems like a well planned plot. Is it any wonder that real americans are upset with people of the muslim belief? I will say that not all muslims are bad, but the ones who are causing all these deaths in this country make the good muslims look bad. I too hope he ends up in a military prison, maybe we won't have to pay the cost of executing him.

43 good soldiers dead or wounded. All those families in shock. Another attack on American soil. Horrible.

Let's let the facts come out. What's on his PC at home? What's on his cell phone records? Was he really shouting the warhoop of beheaders ..the old allahu akhbar chant? Was thisjust a personal jihad? Maybe he was just another nut job. Too bad no soldier was carrying a weapon in there. Just like all the other scenarios ... 1 bad wolf guy with a gun, and a bunch of sheep slaughtered til a sheepdog shows up. Maybe he'll be called a traitor. but not to Muhammed...he's actrually a LOT like the ol' prophet of 630 AD... just whackin' a few infidels... for the religion of peace, of course!!!! But, let's not jump to any conclusions.... Maybe the "Police acted stupidly" by shooting him.... and maybe I'll go buy myself a Golden Gate Bridge with my lunch money.

This is not the first or last sucker punch we'll take from islam. Wake up.

How about calling him Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan who has served in the Armed Forces of the United States of America for over 12 years.

Very sad. Let him stand trial and give him the death penalty. But before that happens, make him do time at Fort Levenworth, Kansas in the military prison. He will beg to be put to death.

How about we call him a person.. no reason to label. What he did was wrong yes! BUt the fact is he killed 13 people I don't think it matters that he was a muslim. .he is a U S army soldier that is what is sad!

Thank you, Rocker. I believe we don't hear "Christian Extremist", because it is not a label that exists. We are fighting Muslim Extremists (e.g. terrorists), and that is exactly what he was rambling about to those around him...that he supported our enemy...which is the Muslim Extremist. I do know some Muslims who are very nice folks, as far as I know. But when we have constantly been attacked every whichway by Extremists who are Muslim, what else should we call them?

rocker

Why is he labeled a Muslim extremist? Because he told fellow soldiers that Muslims should support the Muslims in the Afghanistan war.

My Son Montana Hughlett is stationed at Fort Hood Tx and Thank god he was in Missouri on job when this happened... But that doesn't help the one that was killed and hurt it don't take the pain away!So please pray for all the Soldiers and Family's in Fort Hood Tx! My son is fine but so many was lost and hurt.. We should all come together and pray. I bought some cards that im taking down to the farmers market in the morning for all to sign to let them know we care and are thinking about them all.. If you would like to stop by and sign the cards that would be awesome just look for Kit's Candle Corner.

He is being kept alive so he can stand trial to receive the death sentence. Doesn't make much sense. I believe alot of people would have been cautious to report this person because of his rank. Any military personnel who protests against doing their duty should be treated as a traitor.

Actually the fact that he is still alive might allow us to begin to find out what makes these sick individuals carry out these acts against society.

The majority of the time the perpitrators are killed and we are left to wonder why which is what this man was planning to have happen I am sure.

Why is he labled a Muslim Extremist?

When a person who professes to be a Christian goes on a shooting rampage they are not labled a Christian Extremist.

The people at the base knew for 6 months about this idiots rants and raves and did nothing. I don't know why people cannot get it in their heads that these Muslim extremists are out to KILL us and our way of life. With the pacifist leaders we have running this country, look for more brazen attacks on our citizens.

only harm! I am not sure that this COI will do anything about it, but FDR rounded up all Japanese Americans and contained them during the War. I don't think this is the best idea, but after the incidents in Columbus, Detroit, 9/11, Ft. Hood, and the Muslim U.S. soldier that attacked other soldiers in their tents in Iraq...perhaps there should be some type of vetting or something to prevent them from serving in our military.
