Rollover sends man to hospital

By Brad Bauer, bbauer@mariettatimes.com
POSTED: November 9, 2009

Excessive speed and alcohol is suspected of contributing to an early Saturday morning roll-over wreck near Whipple that injured two area men, one seriously.

According to Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Steve Wetz, the single-vehicle crash occurred when 26-year-old Joshua Campbell, of Lowell, lost control of his 2006 Mazda Tribute near milepost 10 (between Whipple and Lower Salem) on Ohio 821.

"(Campbell) was north on Ohio 821, drove off the right side of the roadway, crossed a private drive, struck a utility pole, and overturned on the roadway," Wetz said. "(Campbell's vehicle) continued off the left side of the roadway, struck a wire fence and a wooden fence post and came to rest on its wheels in a field."

Campbell was transported by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus with head and neck injuries. He was listed in fair condition Sunday afternoon.

Campbell's passenger, Matthew McLeish, 27, of 424 Fifth St., Lowell, was transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital where officials said he was treated and released.

Troopers said it was not immediately known if either of the men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the wreck.

Campbell was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to control a motor vehicle.

Campbell's vehicle was deemed a total loss.

To start off I would like to say I hope both of these young boys have a full recovery mentally and physically. I think it is absurd for you to judge someone for their past people do change and in some cases they dont. Many ppl say Matt was driving. Either way I have faith that our officers will do their best to find out the truth of this horrible accident and not just let Josh take the blame since he has been in trouble with the law on other occassions.

I think that theres some people on here that need to just mind their own business and leave this family alone they are having a tough time with everything if your not friends of the family then leave them alone because they dont need the hassel, i know some of them and im very close to them and i dont think that anyone should be hasseling them if they dont know them!!!!

I know this family personally. It will be a long recovery but he will pull through. Once the entire story is investigated and witnesses get to talk to the police that haven't yet, this story will have to be rewritten.

On 7 Nov 09 Deputy Sheriff Simmons investigated the report of a vehicle that was stolen from the Whipple Tavern and later crashed on State Route 821 in Lower Salem. The vehicle’s owner, Matthew McLeish, age 27, 424 Fifth Street, Lowell, suffered injuries during the crash and initially stated he jumped on the back of the vehicle while it was being stolen. Mr. McLeish said he was then thrown off the vehicle when it crashed. Interviewed again the following day after receiving treatment at the hospital, Mr. McLeish recanted and stated he was too intoxicated to drive so he gave the keys to a friend to drive and that he was a passenger in the vehicle when it crashed. Therefore, Deputy Simmons closed the report of a stolen vehicle as unfounded.

Take a look at the WCSD website. It says the truck belonged to Matt and he reported it stolen then said it wasn't. What else is Matt lying about?

I hope both boys make a full recovery. This Josh seems to have a drinking problem. I believe he almost died not too long ago from drinking and trying to out run the cops in a car. I'm sure he will say anything to keep himself from going back to prison. The only thing in this story that isn't true is that the vehicle did not belong to Josh. Its sad that people are so money hungry these days, I won't be surprised if he tries to get some money out of someone even if it was all due to his own stupidity.

I feel for the boy in Columbus that cannot speak his side at this time, i hope he makes a full recovery. Matt has a past of not being truthful and saying whatever to keep himself out of trouble.

i'm sure OSP ran his tags and checked the registration to show that it was his.

This article is not true. The vehicle does not belong to Joshua Campbell. It's horrible that the person hurt the worst in this accident is being misrepresented.

Its Josh the one that rolled another vehicle last year, like a white ford taurus, if so, dont think that boy should have a license

@ browniegurl: did his business go under? cause last time i talked to him he had his own business and i would bet he had a vehicle. ol' josh doesn't exactly have the best track record in life.

Josh doesn't own a vehicle. Someone needs to get their facts straight.

maybe they should reinvestigate this and see who's vehicle it was and ask the boy in columbus who was driving. Sounds like some covering up. Many witnesses saw them leaving with Matt driving.
