Solvay plant cuts 23

The economic downturn has struck another area employer.
Solvay Advanced Polymers, on Ohio 7 south of Marietta, will permanently lay off as many as 23 employees by Nov. 17, according to plant manager Wally Kandel.
Kandel said Solvay is restructuring its U.S. operations in response to current economic conditions, affecting about 50 jobs nationwide.
At the local facility, 13 hourly employees will be laid off, in addition to as many as 10 salaried employees, he said.
"This is really in response to reduced sales volume," Kandel said Tuesday.
The changes will result in less product being produced and therefore less personnel needed, he said.
The plant, which produces high-performance specialty plastics for a variety of applications, currently employs 250 people.
Voluntary severance packages were offered to workers last week, Kandel said. Whoever is let go will be offered a severance package and assistance in finding a new job or training, whether they took the voluntary offer or not, he said.
There is no immediate expectation that any of the laid-off workers will be brought back.
Despite the layoffs, Kandel said the local facility is still vital to the company.
"The Marietta operations are an important part of Solvay Advanced Polymers and have a good outlook long term," he said.
Officials with the United Steelworkers of America Local that represents Solvay workers could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
The Solvay layoffs are the latest in a series of industrial job cuts in the area this year.
In January, Americas Styrenics announced it was laying off 60 workers. Two days later, the plant's Ohio 7 neighbor, Eramet Marietta, announced it was cutting 110 jobs.
In Noble County, the MAHLE bearing manufacturing plant closed in June, taking nearly 200 positions with it. In Monroe County, Ormet announced it was cutting about 100 jobs after initially warning the entire plant could close down due to problems acquiring raw materials.

These liberals just don't understand that after January 20, 2009, Obama took office as President. Anything after that date, OBAMA not Bush is responsible for what happens. Liberals should of learned that in history class.

How long was Bush in when we were attacked by terrorist 8 months and you democrats blamed him and his administration for not seeing it coming. Your candidate has been in longer, take responsibility. The shoe is on the other foot now and it is time for you democrats to take some of your own medicine.

Seems like you bleeding heart liberals forgot that we were attacked 6 times when Clinton was in and we did not retaliate once. Oh he was too busy playing hide the cigar to be anything more than a lame duck. That set up the next administration to be attacked. Liberal in and we are attacked they roll over and wet themselves and say we are sorry. Conservative in and we are attacked we stomp their guts out. Saddam, oh well you have to got to the kitchen to cook so we went to where the terrorist was at, in septic tanks of life countries and drug them out of their caves and gave them what they deserved.

Bulldog, That's right I forgot! Saddam attacked us! Thanks for reminding me! I also forgot that Obama started this stimulus package foray, and initially took us from a surplus to a deficit. WE should have voted for McCain because he wasn;t going to continue any stimulus packages. Oh wait!

Well stated bulldog. Obama didn't cause the mess, but like a circling Vulture, he & his liberal cronies will consume the last of the remaining flesh!! Don't expect to see a hand up from any of the current administration. When America can no longer get to it's knees, they will ready & waiting, to usher in Socialism along with a new currency. very sad.....

Let the blame go where it belongs. Bill Clinton. He signed the NAFTA that sent your jobs overseas with no recourse of getting them back or taxing the dirt bag companies that left. Bush just staved off the inevitable by having to go to war because we were attacked if some of you democrats forget so easily. The depression was coming for a long time. Change and hope. I got change alright, in my pocket, my check book; he is redistributing the rest to his freeloading democrats. Republican because someone has to pay the bills and not freeload all their life.

Gave us HOPE...lol "Hope is like riding a carousel horse; no matter how fast you go you never get closer to the one in front. The idea is to persuade you to stay on the horse, despite the evitable disappointment, in the 'hope' that things will change. But they don't because the very system is designed to prevent it."

The reason people is still blaming GWB is because the kno that OBAMA IS A FAILURE and they realize what mistake they made.. So now they got to blame GWB. But lets not forget about all those jobs GWB has created since he was in office.. Then you have OBAMA who is scared to deploy more troops to afganistan because he doesn't want to kill his own people because he is.... Well u guys reading this kno what religion he is

What ever problems the country is facing, immediately become the problems of a new president. There is not stop sign that says, "Stop! Past Problems No Longer In Effect." The countries problems have no instant fix, but it seems that the economy is getting worse instead better.

Very sad for the families. Another sign that the full effects of the recession have not yet hit the Mid-Ohio Valley. Of the $787 billion federal stimulus package that was passed to help the U.S. economy, only $34 billion of it has been awarded with large parts of it going to entitlement programs such as unemployment benefits and Medicaid.
