Seth Todd was the pulse, the beat of the Caldwell Redskins defense on the gridiron this fall.

Where Todd went, the Redskins would follow.

Hampered by a leg injury that had him hobbled in the latter part of the season Todd still found his way onto the field and into the pile when it came time to make a tackle.

It's just the way he plays the game.

"He plays with great heart. He is a great athlete, both offensively and defensively but the thing that is most important with him is he's a team leader. When he's out there on the field the whole team rises with his ability, talent and heart," praised Caldwell football coach Mike DeVol.

Todd was named the East District Defensive Player of the Year by a panel of media representatives for his play on the gridiron this fall and was one of nine Redskins honored by the district.

Due to his injury there were times when Todd simply had to come off the field, which especially had him limited on offense, but when it came time to make the big play on defense Todd was there.

"There were games this year that we kept him out because of injuries," DeVol explained.

"There were other games we played him only defensively because we felt we needed him that badly."

This season Todd recorded 124 tackles, six sacks and 16 tackles for loss. In his career the Redskin standout had 341 tackles, 35 tackles for loss and 14 sacks.

Along with Todd's recognition as district player of the year the Redskins had offensive lineman Michael Smith, receiver Bobby Snodgrass, defensive lineman Cody Morris and defensive back Tyler Schockling receive first-team all-district.

Quarterback Dylan Sayre and lineman Shawn Michael received second-team recognition for Caldwell while J.R. Kennedy and Pat Pickenpaugh were honorable mention selections.

"We're very lucky to have kids at Caldwell that play not only with great ability but with great character," DeVol said.

Finishing the 2009 season with a 7-3 record, tied for the top mark in Washington County with the Warren Warriors, the Frontier Cougars had seven players receive recognition from the East District.

"I was just glad to see that we had gotten such good representation," said Frontier football coach Todd Bradford.

Offensive lineman Ryan Haessly and wide receiver Brandan Murphy were accorded first-team all-district selections for the Cougars.

Haessly and Murphy were opposites when it came to experience as this was Murphy's first year of playing high school football while Haessly is a four year varsity player for the Cougars.

"I'm really happy for both those young men," Bradford said.

Murphy caught 36 passes for 609 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver this year, his first since pee wee football.

Haessly was one of the key members of the offensive line and was one of three lineman honored by the district as tackles Dennis Buegel and Jeff Jurin were honorable mention selections.

Those three lineman were responsible for the success of the other four Cougars honored by the district as Murphy was first-team while quarterback Corey Fickiesen, running back Reid Tilton and receiver Tyler Binegar were second-team selections.

"We did have some good young men who were able to protect Corey, who were able to get Reid Tilton some room to carry the ball," Bradford praised.

Fickiesen completed 121-of-206 pass attempts for 1,555 yards and 14 touchdowns and also rushed for 611 yards and nine scores while Tilton picked up 711 yards and 12 touchdowns on 116 attempts.

Binegar had 34 catches for 418 yards and three scores.

Like the Cougars the Fort Frye Cadets also enjoyed a nice string of success on the gridiron.

For the first time in seven years the Cadets recorded a winning season, going 6-4 during the fall campaign which earned seven Cadets honors from the district.

"That's certainly great for the program to see seven guys make it (all-district)," said Fort Frye football coach Eric Huck.

Senior tailback Justin Ellis was the Cadets lone first-team honoree while center Greg Heldman and defensive back Eddie Watson were second-team selections.

Fort Frye had four players earn honorable mention from the district as David Rabourn, Colten Skinner, Cole Dutton and Matt Klinger were recognized as all-district players.

After senior standout quarterback Tanner Robinson went down with a season ending injury the Cadets shuffled around on both sides of the ball, but stepped up and made plays to earn their winning mark.

"A lot of these guys were playing out of position and it didn't phase them. They're football players first," Huck praised.

"You could throw these guys anywhere and they're going to make the best of it."

Four of the Cadets seven honorees were seniors and four year starters for Fort Frye in Ellis, Heldman, Dutton and Rabourn.

"Those four seniors meant a lot to this football team. They're certainly going to be missed but they've got a lot to be proud of. They can come back next year and watch these guys be successful and it's a large part of what they were able to do this past season," Huck said.

Finishing the year with a 9-1 mark and making the playoffs the Monroe Central Seminoles had four players receive first-team honors while coach Jay Circosta was co-Coach of the Year in the East District.

Quarterback Derek-London Dierkes, running back Tyler Kinchen and lineman Hogan Hamilton were all first-team offense while Jesse Headley was first-team as a defensive lineman.

Kole Hogue and Christian Bettinger were second-team all-district for the 'Noles while Adam Masters was an honorable mention choice.

Owners of a 6-4 mark the Shenandoah Zeps had five players honored by the East District.

Offensive lineman Dalton Pritchard was a first-team selection as was quarterback Wes Rataiczak, though he made the district team as a receiver despite limited playing time at the position this fall.

John Hronec and Shane Crum were second-team all-district choices as linebackers for the Zeps and Derek Leasure was an honorable mention selection.

Despite a miserable 0-10 season the Morgan Raiders had three honorable mention choices in the East District in quarterback Ted Vynalek, running back Levi Boyd and receiver Joel Fox.
