MC men win consolation game
From staff reportsBUFFALO - Marietta College's men's basketball team shot 47 percent the second half and pulled away from a 32-30 halftime lead and defeated Pitt-Bradford 70-54 Saturday to win the consolation game in the Buffalo State Coles Classic.
Three Pioneers scored in double figures to lead the way, Kevin Knab and Scott Kimmey scoring 13 points apiece and Jacob Owens tallying 12. Knab was selected to the all-tournament team. He had 17 points in MC's 95-67 tournament-opening loss to Nazareth (N. Y.) and leads the team in scoring with a 16-point average.
Marietta (2-1) shot 40 percent for the game, Pitt-Bradford (1-3) only 32 percent. The Pioneers won the rebounding battle 45-36 with Knab (8) and Conner Kilpatrick (7) combining for 15.
The Pioneers led by as much as 17 points in the second half and had a 16-5 run to take charge.
Marietta doesn't return to action until next Sunday in a 6 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference opener at Capital, picked to finish third in the OAC race. The Crusaders open Tuesday at Wittenberg.

Case Western Reserve 72, Marietta 39
PITTSBURGH - Case Western Reserve shot 46 percent, including 57 percent the second half, in routing Marietta College's women's basketball team 72-39 Saturday in the University Athletic Association-Ohio Athletic Conference Challenge at Carnegie Mellon University.
Ashleigh Tondo led CWR (2-1) with 13 points. Freshman Aleisha Guiler was top scorer for the Pioneers (0-2) with only eight points. MC shot only 26 percent and suffered 28 turnovers, including 18 Spartans' steals.
Guiler, who scored 25 points in a 69-61 loss to Carnegie Mellon Friday, was selected to the all-tournament team.
Carnegie Mellon (3-0) defeated 1-2 John Carroll 75-69 in Saturday's second game. The Tartans' Jacki Cortese was selected Challenge MVP. She scored 24 points in both her games, including a 69-61 win over Marietta.
The Pioneers resume action Saturday in the annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot on Fenton Court. MC plays Oberlin (0-2) at 8 p.m. Thiel (Pa.) (1-1) takes on Mount St. Joseph (2-1) at 6 p.m.
Thiel and Mount St. Joseph play Tuesday, Thiel visiting Edinboro (Pa.) and MSJ hosting Spalding (Ky.).
