No word on board’s next move
Superintendent voices disappointment at Marietta election lossBy Kate York, kyork@mariettatimes.com
Marietta Board of Education members commented only briefly about their failed bond issue and tax levy Monday at the first board meeting since the Nov. 3 election.
They didn't have any discussion on whether the issue, which would have funded the construction of new schools, will go back on the ballot in the spring.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't say I was disappointed we didn't pass this," said Superintendent Herb Young. "I thought it was vital to our school system and our community."
Board member Greg Gault said at a Ohio School Boards Association capital conference earlier this month the three Marietta board members in attendance sought input from board members from other parts of the state.
"We talked to districts who have had these fail, who have had them pass and who have tried again," he said.
"That was invaluable as we look at what direction we want to go in," said board member Wendy Myers, who also attended the conference.
Gault said the board also sought information at the conference that would help it improve the district's current schools.
"Those are mainly safety and security issues that we'll be addressing," he said.
Board member Ryan Elliott, who lost his bid for re-election, said he plans to continue to be involved with the district facilities plan once his term ends Dec. 31.
"I've been talking to a lot of people to get their perspective ( on the path the district should take) and I hope to head that up once I'm not on the board," he said.
In the meantime the district continues to work on an overall vision map board members spent two years creating, said board member Allen Love, with weekly meetings planned for some members and district staff to analyze various aspects of the school system and find ways to make improvements.
Also at Monday's meeting:
The board held an executive session to address a personnel complaint, with several parents joining the board in the session.
"A number of people have shown up and they have a concern with a member of our staff," said Board President Jack Moberg.
Before joining the executive session, parent Jennifer Offenberger told the board in open session that she is aware of concerns with the football program but that she supports Coach Andy Schob, who has been in the position for two years.
Offenberger's son has been part of the football team.
"Just like with any program, the coaching staff probably has some things that need worked out but that's normal and that's life," she said. "I'd like to see those things resolved so that (Schob) can move forward."
Schob has put a lot of "heart, energy and experience" into the team, said Offenberger.
"I believe he's building a program not just today but for the future," she said. "And that's critical for a coach."

RiverRat, I don't really have the time to browse other threads on this site, but if you make misguided global statements like the one you have made here, I'll have a hard time taking anything you say seriously. I have first-hand knowledge that disputes your statement in at least three of the cases presented to the board, and I have little doubt that more would fall in line with those three. Some people choose to believe what they wish, but I will base my statements in facts. Due process was followed by many, and the issues were not playing time. Of course, you could always find a percentage of those that go straight to the board, and some that will even complain just to hear their own voice. In this case however, your global implications are wrong.

Challenging the self-respect of a parent who feels it necessary to escalate their issue all the way to the school board is an interesting approach to say the least. It's easy to sit and justify that thought, if you can convince yourself that every single parent with a concern did not follow due process - starting with the coach personally. A coach EARNS respect through their handling of the athletes. That does not translate to winning percentage, nor does it translate to playing time for any given athlete. It translates to leadership, instruction, and mentoring the team they are in charge of. Let's not forget that these athletes are probably minors and exposing them publically as they convey their issues to the school board is not acceptable. I've had two children in athletics over the last 8 years, both starters. We've had occasional concerns and followed due process. It almost always ends at the coach. Shouldn't we be concerned that these concerns went this far?

The accused deserved to see and hear the concerns. The board is a public entity and are subject to sunshine laws. Why should a coach or any other staff member hear it second handed from the interpretaion of the board or administration? Why shouldn't they hear it direct? The public should never be shut out of this type discussion. While notes may be taken in executive session, they are not public record. Why the secrecy? Respect for the coaches should have started the first day their child went out for the sport. Respect for the coach who fill in for parents who fail to parent their children, begins when the parent signs the consent form to permit the child to play. Some people don't know the word respect. They don't respect themselves, how could they now respect a coach at a public meeting. The board needs to find a way to tell these same people, we support our staff, let them coach, leave them alone. They do have a choice. Stay home.

The School Board approves hiring of staff. The principal and AD of course make the recommendations. It would be appropriate for the school board to know of concerns. And, those that may have had a concern did so the proper way, without "whining". Many of those in attenance support the coaching staff with one or two exceptions. Going into executive session was respectful of those people being discussed.

deerwatcher; get your eyes out of the headlights. That is not something that can happen on the local level, unless you have a plan. If you do put it in writing and oresent it to the State Board, our County Board, and city school board.

The son of the person quoted was a three year starter. Obviously, the problem was not playing time.

Now is the time for Washington County School. What does it cost to run 6 school board offices in Washington Co.? We have an admin. heavy system. We do not need 620+ school systems in 88 counties. I do not care where my money goes for what school. I am tired for funding this out dated system. Move the Washington Co. School Board office to Beverly, not in marietta! What does all these board offices do? If we had less adminstation, we would have more for the kids.

Now The Times is writing articles saying nothing happened regarding the levy. I think The Times needs to give it a rest.

Wht were they allowed to make accusations in executive session. Doesn't seem fair. Let them face the people they are accusing in the open public meeting. Too easy to do stuff behind closed doors. And I agree with the Rat, on all three posts.

Sooo close schools (reno) and sell the office on third to save money and build new schools to ? I would like to have the teachers buyin on this for the children,1. offer after school teaching and then donate the money back for the new school.Have all unions donate time for construction. No teacher lounge reduce costs, for the children. The residents that voted for the bond donate the money they wanted to pay times 2 by checks or cash. ask for cash for cluncker schools buildings or a bailout for our school system.
