Outstanding Washington County 4-H members recognized at banquet
Outstanding Washington County 4-H members were recognized recently at the annual county awards banquet held Nov. 13 at the Washington County Career Center.
Arielle Gebhart and Josiah Fryman were selected as the Margaret Meredith Outstanding 4-H'ers in Washington County.
This award was established in honor of the outstanding service and leadership that Margaret Meredith demonstrated to Washington County 4-H through her many years as a club leader with the Oak Grove 4-Fold 4-H Club. She was one of the first "State 4-H Hall of Fame" honorees.
The Margaret Meredith Award recognizes the outstanding efforts of two 4-H members each year who are examples of the expertise that can be gained through 4-H project work and leadership skills that can be gained at the club and county levels.
Gebhart has been in 4-H for five years. She served as president this year of both the Explorers and Carteens 4-H clubs. During her 4-H career she has taken leadership projects such as teen boardsmanship, Carteens, alcohol decisions, and Tobacco and You. Her other project area of interest was raising broilers, which helped her with her Junior Fair Board responsibilities where she served in the Poultry Department.
She was also selected as a counselor for Space, Senior and Junior 4-H camps, and earned positions on the 4-H Camp Planning and 4-H Advisory committees. Gebhart was also selected as the 2009 Junior Fair Queen, won the clock trophy at the state fair for her Carteens project this year, and was selected for various trip awards, including Citizenship Washington Focus this year.
Outside of 4-H, in school, Gebhart served as a senior mentor, Student Council member, a reporter for FFA, and editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.
She currently is in her first quarter at The Ohio State University, where she is working to be accepted in the highly competitive athletic training program.
Fryman has been an eight-year member of the Honeysuckle Hills 4-H Club, holding offices of president for two years, vice president for a year, treasurer for two years, and for one year each song leader, energy officer and health and safety officer.
He has also served in various leadership positions outside his club. He has been a counselor for 4-H Space, Senior and Junior camps, a Barlow Junior Fair Board member, a 4-H Advisory Committee member and an emcee for the 4-H Endowment Auction. He also participated in Ohio 4-H Teen Conference, Carving New Ideas Camp and Barlow Fair Public Speaking Contest.
He also volunteers with his club, making up baskets to help raise money at the 4-H Endowment and Camp Hervida fundraisers, donating items for the lemon shake stand, and setting up barns before the Washington County Fair.
In school, Fryman was president of the Fort Frye FFA, on the varsity baseball team and in the National Honor Society. He graduated with merit and honors in May. He is currently enrolled at Marietta College, where he is majoring in petroleum engineering.
