Palm LKC Player of the Year
By Jim ButtaWILLIAMSTOWN -Parkersburg Catholic failed in its attempt to win the Little Kanawha Conference's Class A division, but that didn't stop the league's coaches from selecting eight players from Danny Tennant's squad on the All-LKC team.
Named to the first team offense for a second time in a row was senior wide receiver Cole Cwynar while senior Sam Walters was the league's repeat pick on the defensive line. Jason Williams, who was a first team member of the secondary in 2008, was chosen as the first team offensive utility player while senior Chris Howard, juniors Jake Brunoni and David Garvin and sophomores Peter Walters and Geno DeMaio round out the Crusaders' first team selections.
Conference champion Williamstown placed six players and head coach Terry Smith on the honor unit while Wirt County placed five on the lists.
Earning Offensive Player of the Year laurels was the Yellowjackets' Joe Palm while the defensive Player of the Year was the Crusaders' Sam Walters and the Coach of the Year was Williamstown's Smith.
Palm, a Kennedy Award candidate, saved his best for last, rushing for a team-leading 1,440 yards and 15 touchdowns on 207 carries while also connecting on 47-of-53 PATs and 4-of-8 field goals to finish with 161 points as Williamstown (9-3) closed out its season with a 28-14 loss to nemesis Wheeling Central in the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs.
Joining Palm in the backfield is Calhoun County's Randy Fluharty, South Harrison's Tanner Belt and St. Marys' C.D. Cox. Fluharty concluded his stay in Mt. Zion by rushing for 1,167 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns on 178 carries for a Red Devil team which finished with a 6-4 mark, but missed a return trip to the post season.
Cox, only a junior, led a Blue Devil team ravaged by injuries with 540 yards and 6 touchdowns on 117 carries and Belt was the main weapon in a Hawks' rushing attack which led the Harrison Countians to a 6-4 mark.
Earning the first team quarterbacking slot was Wirt County senior Jake Hutchinson. All the Tiger signal-caller accomplished in 2009 was pass from more than 2,300 yards and lead the entire Mountain State with 36 touchdown passes.
Joining him on the unit is sophomore wide receiver Dalton Brindo, who was on the receiving end of more than 50 of those attempts for 1,000 yards and a state-leading 21 touchdowns-three in the Tigers' 46-26 loss to No. 3 Richwood in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
Earning first team selections on the offensive line was Williamstown's Doug Walters at center, Calhoun's Christian Cottrell and Wirt's Ryan Litton at guards and the Crusaders' Peter Walters and the Yellowjackets' David Huggins at tackle.
Joining Brindo on the receiving corp is Cwynar, who caught 45 passes for 748 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior, while the placekicking duties went to DeMaio and Williams captured the utility slot.
Defensively, the front line is made up of the Crusaders' Sam Walters, Williamstown's Cody Matheny, Calhoun's Tim Sutro and South Harrison's Robert Moore. Walters overcame an elbow injury to finish with 68 tackles-9.5 sacks.
The linebacking corp includes the Red Devils' Aaron Yoak, Williamstown's Aaron Jones, Brunoni and South Harrison's Teddy Harper. Jones, who led the Yellowjackets with 153 tackles, is only a sophomore.
Wirt County's Zach Cheuvront led the area with 10 interceptions and earned first team honors and is joined by Holden, Garvin and Williamstown's Tyler George while Howard is the unit's punter and Wirt's Tate Linder its utility player.
