Stop and think before bringing a pet home

November 30, 2009

We're barely into the official holiday shopping season, and already we're seeing more animals at area stores in need of good homes.

That more playful puppies and cute kittens are stationed in stores these days is no coincidence.

It only stands to reason that more foot traffic quite possibly could lead to more pets finding a home for the holidays, and that is a good thing.

But despite the cries and pleas of children, we ask parents to refrain from purchasing pets as gifts this time of year, or any time for that matter, before carefully examining all options concerning animal adoption.

Potential pet owners should realize there are many responsibilities associated with animal ownership and should have all the facts before bringing a "special friend" home.

Brush up on the various types of dogs and cats available in order to find the best breed for you. For example, find out which animals require special exercise needs, are prone to certain ailments and may not be good with children.

Choosing a family pet indeed does require much time, commitment and money.

A pet should never be ignored because an owner is too tired or busy, and owners, including children, should know how and when to provide food, water, care, companionship and exercise for animals.

Cost is another factor potential pet owners should take into consideration.

Licenses, food, grooming and veterinary care costs need to be considered besides paying for spaying or neutering.

Other things to ponder include suitable living arrangements for a pet, caring for a pet while you're on vacation and training classes.

Stop and think about why many older animals live at shelters. They are there because someone didn't take responsibility.

We're all drawn to the many floppy-eared hounds and furry kittens begging for our attention in pet shop windows, but we're asking area residents with children in tow this holiday shopping season to take the time to research the best possible pet options.

Good things come to those with patience, and those who study up on the basics of animal care will be rewarded for their efforts in successfully providing a caring home for their pets. Of course, the unconditional love from a pet makes it all worthwhile.
