Belpre holiday tour of homes coming Sunday
By Pamela Brust, Special to The TimesBELPRE - Sunday's Town & Country Belpre Christmas Tour of Homes will feature six stops in Belpre and Vincent, including the Farmers Castle Museum and Education Center.
The tour will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visitors can start anywhere along the tour that day. The event is sponsored by the Belpre Woman's Club. All proceeds from the event are used to fund medical scholarships given by the club.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at Neff's Country Loft and Curves of Belpre, both on Washington Boulevard, or at the stops the day of the tour.
The tour this year includes: The riverside home of Betty and Gene Hutchinson, 1309 Blennerhassett Ave.; Jean Robinson, 503 Ridge St.; Farmers Castle Museum and Education Center, 509 Ridge St.; Kids First day care center, 1901 Washington Blvd.; and Marion Metz's historic home at 1505 Putnam Howe Drive, all in Belpre. The Vincent home of Jeff and Stephanie Starcher, 65 Canterbury Court, is also on the tour this year.
Each stop will be decked out and ready for the holidays, and visitors can get refreshments while at the museum/education center.
"One of the highlights at the museum is our newly refurbished Victorian-era room," said Nancy Sams, president of the Belpre Area Historical Society, which operates the museum. "We have two pump organs, a grandfather's clock, Victorian-era stove, Marietta Mantel, 1886 six-piece parlor suite. That's our newest addition that we spent most of our time, energy and dollars on this summer."
The Starcher home is located on Canterbury Court and can be reached by taking Ohio 339, turning right at Oxbow and taking the second left turn. This is the first time the Starcher home has been on the tour.
"We have a lot of snowmen and there are several trees up, with each tree having its own theme," said Stephanie Starcher, adding that the home is a contemporary cedar and brick style with open loft.
Another first-time destination on the tour is the Hutchinson residence, built in 1997, is a brick, raised ranch-style house featuring views of the Ohio River and Blennerhassett Island. Betty Hutchinson, who is a native of Belpre, features her love of poinsettia throughout the home.
"My Christmas cactus is also blooming," she said.
The Robinsons' Ridge Street home features a lot of collectibles and memorabilia as well.
"It's a very cute home, she has a lot of 'Gone with the Wind' and other collectibles," said Metz, who is coordinating the tour for the women's club.
Metz's historic Putnam Howe Drive home is decked for the holidays, featuring many collectibles as well. The front yard has a gazebo complete with a carousel horse.
