Plant to add 116 jobs

Tax credit opens door to $1.7M Thermo Fisher expansion

By Evan Bevins, ebevins@mariettatimes.com
POSTED: December 8, 2009

Thermo Fisher Scientific's Marietta facility plans to add 116 jobs with a $1.7 million expansion over the next year.

It's welcome news for a region that has seen more than 1,000 jobs leave in the last year and unemployment rates reach double digits.

"These are pretty good jobs in a great company," said Mike Jacoby, executive director of the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority. "I think this is very good news for all of Washington County."

Karen Kirkwood, Thermo Fisher's corporate vice president of communications, said the project will update the 401 Mill Creek Road facility and add equipment to accommodate new product lines.

"The 116 positions are mostly manufacturing, but there may be some sourcing and maybe even some research jobs there," Kirkwood said.

It was not immediately clear Monday when hiring would begin.

The project will also retain 480 existing jobs, Kirkwood said.

As the company prepared to move product lines from a number of other sites, including closing and consolidating some facilities, a strategic review identified the Marietta plant as a target for expansion, Kirkwood said. A combination of the facility's reputation and workforce, along with a tax credit offered by the state of Ohio, helped make the decision, she said.

The project and new jobs were announced Monday when the Ohio Tax Credit Authority approved a 50 percent job creation tax credit for a seven-year term. The value of the tax credit is estimated at $328,832 over the term, and the company will be required to maintain operations at the project site for 10 years.

Jacoby was in Columbus Monday for the authority's vote and the announcement, along with Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Charlotte Keim and Washington County Commissioner Cora Marshall.

"Thermo Fisher has been really the shining star, not only in our Valley, but throughout the state of Ohio," Keim said. "This is wonderful news."

Thermo Fisher is a manufacturer of specialty cold storage equipment such as freezers and refrigeration for the medical and research laboratory markets. The local facility began in Marietta in 1950 as the small, family-owned Forma Scientific. It later became part of Thermo Electron, which merged with Fisher Scientific International Inc. in 2006.

The local plant was recognized by Industry Week magazine as one of the 10 best plants in North America for 2008, based on its safety record and efforts to improve efficiency.

In March, two dozen positions were cut from the facility, with a company spokesman citing "the dynamics of current market conditions, including labor and energy costs, site utilization and other company resources." Further specifics were not provided at that time, although Kirkwood said Monday she believed that was a consolidation move that would not involve the same types of positions that will be added under the new project.

I hope they call the people back they laid off first.

bet they don't, they'll hire in new people for less pay than the ones laid off...granted they'll have a decent wage, but well below the wage of the ones who got laid off...it's all about the money...tax breaks and new hires at lower wages makes for more money for corporate...just the way it is...GREED!!!!!!!!!

Hey Parrot, the only thing thats ignorant is your 1880s union mentality. Hows that worked for this area. You want the proof? Open your far sighted eyes and look outside. Non union, free market, higher education areas are thriving...and yes, even now. Wake up and realize it's 2010.

armybrat - Attitudes like that are why Marietta is dying! Everyone, especially our young people, are moving away with the jobs and to wish the same for some other community is short sighted and (to be honest) ignorant.

Rather than doing all these "put downs" about new jobs coming to Washington County, you all should be grateful for the jobs. As for people losing jobs away from here, these people can move with the jobs. It is their choice of whether they go where the work is, even if it means having to move their families to Marietta. This is a time when you have to go where the jobs are, because, the jobs certainly aren't going to come to you.

obamunismsux - I hope you can say capitalism in Chinese because that is where it is taking us.

Hey Parrot, the "bashing" is for the law makers to see past their noses and realize if local state and federal tax and labor laws were better for business they would stop the shuffling overseas. Tax breaks and cheaper labor is called competition (it's also known as capitalism) and we're losing because of high taxes and labor laws so what is this administration doing...trying to increase taxes, regulation, and broaden unions. I don't have to see past anything to understand that. Capitalism works, communism doesn't.

This is GREAT news for Marietta and the area, but this is NOT good news for our country as a whole.

REMEMBER that these are NOT new jobs that have been created by Thermo Fisher but rather jobs that are being eliminated somewhere else and moved here. While we are celebrating there are families in another community looking at joblessness.

We MUST start creating jobs in America and stop the trend of just moving them around to wherever the company can get the biggest tax break or the cheapest labor. This practice, which is far too common these days does nothing but weaken our communities and creates insecurity for the working men and women who never know when it will be their job that gets moved to another location domestically or internationally.

Those of you bashing Obama need to look past your nose and see the whole picture.

I say again that this is GREAT news for our area, but remind you to not forget the families that will be hurt by this news also.

Non-union...tax breaks...expansion. Bye bye Obama, Strickland, & Wilson. Wonder what would happen to the new power plant in Meigs coming back on line if they got the same? There are thousands of potential jobs in this area if idiots like Charlie Wilson understood economics.

I will beileve it when I see it. They said the same thing about Globe in Beverly around this time last year and they are very very close to shutting the doors there.

It is really nice to see new jobs coming to this area. I am quite sure there will be a long line of applicants when they start hiring. Thank you Therma Fischer and good luck to all the current employees and to the future hiree's.

Great news for the area! Just goes to show when businesses pay less taxes it spurs new expansion and job growth . This has been proven time after time so those in Washington DC need to take notes.

Gee, an announcement of new jobs "stimulated" by a tax break for a growing company. And Obama had to convene a gaggle of experts to tell him how to grow jobs in this country. Just more evidence he has NO FRICKIN" IDEA HOW TO RUN A COUNTRY!

Congratulations to the long-term employees of Forma who have weathered multiple transitions, acquisitions, management and technology changes to maintain the best product quality in the Thermo family. It's the veterans from the Forma days who have stayed the course and created an attractive environment for corporate managers to count on year after year. Look for this facility to become the flagship of Thermo thanks to a great group of career employees who did not compromise quality. And if you continue to see new companies locate in this area, this is one reason why. Quality attracts quality. Government incentives, not stimulus handouts, and corporate capaital create jobs. This is how it works folks. Make sure you educate your congressman on this basic issue. No politician can claim credit for this one. Thank the workers at Forma for attracting more of the same.
