EXTRA: Keck bond; GMAC infusion; Artifacts found
Staff and Wire ReportsKECK BOND SET AT $5 MILLION:
A judge today restored bond for convicted child rapist Daniel Keck, but set it a $5 million - 10 times the amount he had to post prior to his trial.
Keck, 43, of Marietta, was sentenced in October on 29 child sex crimes after a trial and investigation that began when a boy came forward last January and said he had been abused. Five victims testified against Keck during his trial and a search of his Marietta home turned up video and photographic evidence of abuse against young boys.
At a hearing Wednesday, Washington County Common Pleas Judge Ed Lane granted bond but set it at the amount requested by the prosecution. Keck's attorney requested a $500,000 bond, the same amount used prior to his trial.
Prosecutors said they asked for the higher bond because they believe Keck is more of a flight risk after his conviction.
MORE AID FOR GMAC EXPECTED:
WASHINGTON (AP) - The government was moving ahead Wednesday on a fresh multibillion dollar cash infusion to stabilize auto financing company GMAC Financial Services, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because discussions weren't complete, says the government aid would range around $3 billion. That would be less than the roughly $6 billion the government had earlier thought GMAC would need to stabilize the company.
Shoring up GMAC has been a major component of the Obama administration's massive effort to rescue ailing automakers General Motors and Chrysler, which both operate in Ohio. The lender provides critical wholesale financing to thousands of GM and Chrysler auto dealers, allowing them to stock their showroom floors with vehicles. GMAC has already received $12.5 billion in taxpayer money and is 35 percent owned by the federal government.
But GMAC also operates a large residential mortgage business, ResCap, which was battered by the recent housing collapse. GMAC was obligated by the Treasury Department to raise $11.5 billion in additional capital earlier this year after failing the government's stress test for banks, largely because of ResCap's big losses. However, GMAC had difficulty raising money because of its financial woes, making an extra government infusion necessary.
An announcement of the latest injection of aid could come late Wednesday or on Thursday.
NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS FOUND AT PLANT SITE:
MIDDLETOWN (AP) - Native American artifacts believed to date back thousands of years have been recovered from the planned site of a new industrial plant in southwest Ohio.
SunCoke Energy Inc. found some items as it prepared to build a plant to help supply coke for AK Steel's Middletown Works. The Knoxville, Tenn.-based company hired an archaeological firm to excavate two sites near a creek.
Officials say several hundred prehistoric artifacts were recovered, mostly fragments from arrowheads, spearheads, and evidence of stone tool making. They are believed to be from the era between 8000 B.C. and 1200 A.D.
Preservation officials expect the items to be turned over to the Cincinnati Museum Center.
