Stabbing victim learns he was targeted

Assailant’s sentencing on March 15

Marietta resident and stabbing victim David Scheimann went to a Thursday court hearing with the hopes he and his teenage attacker would be able to move past the September incident as soon as possible.

But after hearing prosecutors describe how 19-year-old Marietta College sophomore Thomas G. Robison II identified him as a target, Scheimann said his sentiments changed.

Robison is left facing up to 10 years in prison after reaching a plea agreement Thursday. He will be sentenced at 10:30 a.m. March 15 by Washington County Common Pleas Judge Ed Lane.

"To actually hear how he described to police how he followed and stalked me was really disturbing," Scheimann said. "My first understanding was that he spotted me at Speedway and challenged me (near there), but to find out this was so premeditated really bothers me."

Scheimann spent a week in an area hospital with wounds to his hands and abdomen following the botched robbery attempt. He staggered back to Speedway, 100 Seventh St., after he was stabbed to get help.

Assistant Washington County Prosecutor Kevin Rings said Robison confessed to identifying Scheimann as a target as the man was leaving the Locker Room bar more than four blocks away from the crime scene around 2:30 a.m. Sept. 27.

"He saw him leaving and said it appeared he had money," Rings said.

Robison followed Scheimann on foot along Greene Street to the Speedway gas station on Seventh Street, where he approached Scheimann and asked for $5 for cigarettes, Rings said.

When Scheimann denied the request, Robison continued to follow the man a short distance up Greene Street, where he brandished a switchblade, demanded money and attacked the 33-year-old.

"I'm glad it was me and not someone else and that I was able to come out on top of things," Scheimann said. "If it was someone else, especially a friend, I would really be out for blood. This is really not as easy to forgive after learning it wasn't a spur-of-the-moment thing."

Rings said Robison was identified as a suspect after he returned to the Marietta College campus and described the incident to a few people inside his dorm. In turn, those individuals called police.

In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a third-degree felony count of tampering with evidence. Rings alleged Robison washed his clothes and the knife immediately after returning to his dorm.

After Rings finished detailing how he believed the crime was committed, Lane asked Robison if it was the truth.

"Yes, sir," Robison said, pausing to wipe a tear from his eye.

Robison has been in the custody at the Washington County Jail since his arrest and is being held without bond while awaiting his sentencing.

freerange - pricey colleges hold back information? What are you smoking? It was the students who called the police and if you educate yourself you will learn that ALL college are required by law to report all crimes on campus (The Cleary Act). This is not about the cost of a college, this is about a person who committed a terrible crime and thankfully got caught - because students called the police.

Ironically, he will soon be in prison being traded for cash and cigarettes and maybe a good stabbing of his own. Maybe then he will gain some insight on victimization first hand.

It's a shame this had to happen to David. I grew up with him and he's a great guy. I'm glad this wasn't worse than it was. He could've been killed! I hope Robison get the full 10 years!

All pricey, private collages hold back information as it would possibly hurt enrollment. Look at the scare and absense of students at hocking.

An interesting thing these days in the world of privacy colleges aren't allowed to escalate information about disciplinary action to parents... so this guy may have had warning signs and the college could do nothing about it until he broke a campus rule or broke the law.

But...I don't understand how this could happen! Switchblades are illegal! Surely banning a weapon will prevent a crime...won't it?

I'm sure he was misunderstood & probably mistreated as a child. Perhaps what he really needs is a hug & counseling. And why are you guys being so mean to this poor little criminal? My goodness, can't we just all get along?

This is another great reason that we have conceal/carry in Ohio. Too bad David didn't have a 9mm and BOOM.

Lets just hope the judge has the courage to give him the full 10 years. Another plea deal,,, good Lord

As an MC grad' this whole incident disgusts me. Shame on you for preying on an innocent person to feed whatever evil and sick greedy desires that drives you. Any comments Ms Scott?
