Tigers defeat PHS, 57-34

PARKERSBURG - The Parkersburg girls basketball program is in a bona fide scoring funk.

After South limited PHS to 21 points less than a week ago, Marietta kept the Big Reds in check Monday night and pulled off a 57-34 road victory at Memorial Fieldhouse.

"Defensively, we did a really good job - it's just our inability to put the ball in the hole," PHS coach Kenny DeMoss said.

PHS limited Marietta's leading scorer LeAnne Ross to seven points, but option 'B' in the form of Maegan Grosel picked up the slack with 19 points. Grosel contributed six points as the Tigers completed the game with a 13-0 run.

The Marietta bench also gave a much-needed lift, especially at the end of the first half when the Tigers took a 25-13 lead into intermission. The reserves accounted for 23 points for the contest.

"One of the things which has made us successful this year is that we've developed other people, and LeAnne has bought into that," Marietta coach Scott Cozzens said.

Five different players scored as Marietta built an 11-3 lead in the first six minutes of the first quarter. PHS freshman Imani Ward made her presence felt in the post and sparked the Big Reds on a 6-1 run to close the period. Ward finished with five points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Marietta answered with a 7-0 spurt to start the second quarter thanks to Allison Fouss' only bucket - a 3-pointer from the top of the key. The Big Reds made just two field goals for the period and trailed 21-13 when Marietta's Ali Summers knocked down two buckets in the final 30 seconds to extend the advantage to 25-13.

Whatever DeMoss said in the locker room at halftime worked because the Big Reds cut a 14-point deficit in half to 27-20 on the strength of a Precious Ramsey 3-pointer.

Grosel then went to work and scored eight of her 10 third-quarter points to push the margin back to 17 at 42-25.

PHS made one last push and sliced the deficit back to 10 at 44-34 with 5 1/2 minutes remaining in the contest. However, those would be the final points for the Big Reds.

Before fouling out with 4 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Tori Wilson tied Christine Jacobs for scoring honor with eight points.

Despite having only one walk-through to prepare for PHS full-court pressure, Cozzens was pleased with how his Tigers responded. His team committed just 13 turnovers.

"I scouted PHS three times and the two days we had to get ready, we got snowed out and couldn't get into the gym to practice," Cozzens said. "PHS is deep and they just coming at you, and over time it's going to pay off for them."
