Web tutorial to help with computer literacyFebruary 24, 2010From local reports Generations on Line, a Web-based tutorial, is helping to bridge the gap of computer literacy locally among generations. Provided through Senior Service America Inc. and the Community Action Program Corp. of Washington-Morgan counties, Generations on Line is part of a national Digital Divide Community Service Initiative designed to teach senior adults and disabled individuals basic computer skills free of charge. Generations on Line provides on-screen, step-by-step instruction to help older adults who have never used the computer to learn how to use the Internet. Tutorial lessons also cover topics such as general familiarity with the keyboard and mouse, and how to send an e-mail. Host partners include the O'Neill Center in Marietta, and the Morgan County Learning Center in McConnelsville. Sites in Belpre and New Matamoras will later serve as hosts to Generations on Line. A trained peer coach is available at each location to guide and assist individuals with tutorials. "We are excited to partner with Community Action on this important initiative," said Terry Zdrale, executive director of the O'Neill. "The Broughton Computer Lab located at the O'Neill Senior Center is the perfect location for seniors to learn Internet basics. The on-site peer coach helps seniors one-on-one offering needed guidance and encouragement. Following the Generations on Line training, seniors are encouraged to come in and use the computers to conduct Internet searches, send and receive emails and so much more." The desired outcome of the initiative is that older adults using the tutorial will have their first positive experience using the Internet. Another intended benefit of the program is to promote lifetime learning and reduce social isolation in older adults as their use of the Internet increases.
