The Marietta High Tiger Navy will be traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa. Saturday to compete in the Scholastic Springs in Support of a Glimmer of Hope on Sunday.
Part of the regatta proceeds will be going to support breast cancer awareness.
MHS will be trying to gain some speed on competitors this weekend in preparation for the Midwest Championships held in Cincinnati May 8 and 9.
Last weekend, the Tiger Navy met up with Central Catholic High School and Oakland Catholic High School for the fifth annual dual between the schools in Zanesville.
The Marietta boys were matched up against Central Catholic, a premier rowing powerhouse out of Pittsburgh, Pa. The Lady Tiger Navy was up against Oakland Catholic also out of Pittsburgh, Pa.
The two hour, ten event schedule began at 9:45 a.m. with the boys Novice 8 races. As the highlight of the day for the boys team, the first novice 8 crossed the line ahead of rival Central Catholic with a winning time of 4:50.7. Central came in nearly ten seconds behind crossing with a time of 5:38. The victory enabled MHS to retain the Bob Armstrong Cup.
The Armstrong Cup was dedicated in 2009 for the novice 8 race in honor of the late Bob Armstrong who coached at MHS as well as local high schools PHS and PSHS. The remaining boys races included the first varsity 8, second varsity 8, and third varsity 8.
Central was able to overcome the quick starts from the boys three varsity boats and put on a very strong show of how quick they (Central) are in the varsity races by placing first in each event respectively.
On the girls side, there was some very tight racing between MHS and OCHS.
The first and second varsity 8 races saw Oakland ousting Marietta by a slight margin of 4.44 and 4.81 seconds respectively.
In the closest race of the day, Oakland's novice 8 pulled out the win over Marietta (5:35.41) by .81 seconds crossing the line at 5:34.60.
As highlights for the girls team, Marietta placed first and second in the lightweight 4 and won the junior 8.
The junior 8 won by the largest margin of the day in the girls races with a time of 5:52.9, 5.22 seconds ahead of Oakland (5:58.12).
