PATASKALA - The Marietta High cross country girls proved that they were a strong team Saturday at the McGowan Invitational at Watkins Memorial High.
The girls finished in eighth place in a field of 22 teams.
Pacing the Dale Leeper-coached varsity team was Erica Dawson, who placed 13th overall in a time of 19 minutes, 45.40 seconds.
Closely following were Julie Fobes in 20:40.7, Emily Garrison (21:05.1), and Colleen Miracle (21:35.1).
Rounding out the rest of the team were Lizzie Frazier (21:49.9), Abby Ketelsen (22:02.4), and Jordan Hensler (23:48.9).
With such a large field of teams, the girls performed exceptionally well, playing to their strengths and running smart races.
The weather provided good running conditions, and there was no doubt that the girls used this to their advantage.
Their average time was a quick 20:59.24.
These great races transferred into a good finish for the Lady Tigers.
Hilliard Darby was 10th with 280 points; Western Central, ninth with 265 , Marietta, eighth with 261; Mount Vernon, seventh with 193 and Dublin Jerome, sixth with 191.
The top five teams consisted of Watkins Memorial with 158 points, Centerville with 114, Upper Arlington with 85, Dublin Coffman with 77, and New Albany with 73, respectively.
The MHS Cross Country boys team also rared well, finishing 15th out of a field of 28 teams.
First to cross the finish line for the Tigers was Mitchell Grose with a time of 16:55.2. Not too far behind were Sam Garrison (17:29.9) and Alex Wesel (17:34.4).
Completing the rest of the varsity were Avery Phillips (18:10.8), Nick Hannuksela (18:39.7), Nathan Diehl (18:48.9), and Martin Orr (21:33.8).
The boys battled stiff some competition.
St. Charles was 10th with 307 points; Worthington Kilbourne, ninth with 288; Hilliard Bradley, eighth with 276; Wester South, seventh with 243; and Pickerington North, sixth with 193 points.
Rounding out the top five squads were Watkins Memorial (187 points), Lancaster (178), New Albany (164) points, Reynoldsburg (118) and Dublin Coffman (101), respectively.
