Fall into fall fashion

September 18, 2010
By Ashley Hill, ahill@mariettatimes.com

The first day of autumn is Thursday and the leaves on many trees have already started changing from green to shades of red and orange. This means before too long, the temperatures will start to drop and it will be time to pack away those shorts and tank tops and fill your closet with clothes more appropriate for the crisp fall air.

But don't forget, with every new season comes new fashion trends.

"We are certainly brimming in fall fashions and have been selling fall fashions," said Teri Ann Pfeffer, owner of Teri Ann's on Front Street in Marietta.

Missy Deskins models a few things from Teri Ann's in Marietta that are popular for fall, including skinny jeans, and a large purse.

Pfeffer went on to say that leggings and skinny legged pants are a hot item for fall.

"With that comes a longer cardigan, longer jacket, longer sweater, something hip length or longer because it's in better proportion with the skinny legged pant," she said.

Blouses with feminine touches, such as subtle ruffles, are also a popular clothing item for fall, Pfeffer said, as well as cargo pants and cargo jackets.

Fact Box

What's hot for fall:

  • Long cardigan, jacket or sweater over skinny legged pants or leggings.
  • Blouses with subtle ruffles.
  • Cargo pants and jackets.
  • Plaids.
  • Cobalt blue, gold, purple, camel, sheer black, emerald green and bright red.
  • Multiple layers of bracelets.
  • Ankle boots.

Cargo pants and jackets are typically either olive or khaki colored and have multiple pockets on them.

The InStyle magazine website, www.instyle.com, recommends pairing a black tuxedo blazer and platform pumps with cargo pants that hit just above the ankle for a dressy look for fall.

As for accessories, Pfeffer said big purses, purses that go across the body and fashion scarves are all the rage this fall.

Fashion scarves, unlike winter scarves, are meant more for looks than for warmth.

"Last year, they (fashion scarves) were everywhere - this year they're still going to be very strong," Pfeffer said.

She noted that when it comes to jewelry, silver will be more popular than gold this fall.

"The amount of jewelry we go through is amazing because people like fashion jewelry," she said. "Multiple layers of bracelets is a good look right now with a statement ring."

There's also fall clothing on the shelves at Cato in Marietta, according to store manager Teresa Anaya.

"We're getting a lot of orange and brown, yellow and green in for fall," she said. "We're getting a lot of sweaters."

Anaya said some of those sweaters are cropped and meant to be worn with a camisole, or tank top, underneath, while others are long and look best with leggings and a thick belt over top.

"The higher waisted, thick belts are in," she said.

Ankle boots, animal prints and plaids will also be popular this fall, Anaya said.

The InStyle website indicates cobalt blue, gold, purple, camel, sheer black, emerald green and bright red are the hot colors for fall and leather jackets, chunky knits and faux fur are also popular.
