VINCENT - The Warren Lady Warriors spent less than two minutes of the contest with the visiting Morgan Lady Raiders tied.
For the remaining 78-plus minutes of play the Lady Warriors were leading on the soccer pitch and usually by a sizable margin as Warren picked up a dominating 7-2 win over Morgan at the Warren Soccer Complex Monday night.
Warren fired 20 shots on goal against the Morgan goalkeepers with six different girls putting the ball in the net.
The Lady Warriors scored four of their seven goals in the first 18 minutes of play, but as has often been the case this fall, they went into a lull and didn't score again until the 54th minute of play.
"The problem is, it doesn't matter who we play, we do some good stuff but then we cannot continue the whole game," said Warren soccer coach Ekrem Eksi.
Part of that offensive lull was no doubt due to heavy substitutions by the Lady Warriors, who subbed every girl on the bench into the game, but they still had the let downs that Eksi would like his young team to learn to avoid.
Those letdowns, however, didn't occur until the second half.
For the first half of play, it was all about the Warren offense.
Mackenzie Ullman got the offense started in the 2nd minute of play when she took a through ball from teammate Melissa Dickerson and raced past the Morgan defense to go in all alone against Morgan goalkeeper Kiersten Apperson.
A light tap put the ball away from the goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 Lady Warrior lead.
Seven minutes later, Dickerson got on the board herself with a long shot from well outside the box that somehow meandered its way into the net, giving Warren a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
Ullman tallied the goal that would ultimately turn out to be the game-winner in the 14th minute of play when she took a chip pass from freshman Raelyn Gardner, dribbled up field a few yards and fired a shot into the right corner of the net for a 3-0 Lady Warrior advantage.
Four minutes later Gardner's speed created another goal when she out-raced everybody on the field to a long pass past the Morgan defense for a breakaway shot into the net for a 4-0 Warren lead.
"We needed to get in front of the ball a little more. Warren played a very nice game," said Morgan girls' soccer coach Mike Chapin.
That 4-0 advantage for the Lady Warriors would be the score for nearly 30 minutes of play.
It wasn't until Warren junior defender Breanna Duff created her own goal in the 54th minute by winning the ball away from the Morgan defense in the midfield that the Lady Warriors got on the board again.
Duff fought off the Morgan defense and brought the ball upfield herself before firing a shot that just sailed over the head of Lady Raider goalkeeper Jennie Chordas, who replaced Apperson at the halftime break.
That goal sparked some life into the Lady Warrior offense and four minutes later Warren sophomore Addie Barnes won the ball away from Morgan in the Lady Raiders' defensive third and fired a well-placed shot past Chordas into the net for a 6-0 lead.
Freshman Marissa O'Callaghan added the final goal for the Lady Warriors in the 70th minute when she put a shot into the left corner of the net.
Down by seven goals the Lady Raiders didn't let up and their persistence spoiled the shutout as Morgan sophomore Josi Aber collected a loose ball in the box and fired a shot past Warren keeper Liz Manning to make the margin 7-1 in the 77th minute.
With less than a minute to play Morgan senior Cassie Copeland, the Lady Raiders' all-time leading goal scorer, collected her third goal of the season and 21st of her career when she fired a direct kick that glanced off the crossbar and came straight down off Manning and into the net in the 79th minute of play.
"It wasn't the prettiest score, but we're happy the way the girls kept at it," Chapin said.
