Stockport woman killed in accident

February 12, 2011
From staff reports

A Morgan County woman died Thursday after a single-vehicle accident in Stockport.

Crystal D. Hoover, 29, of Stockport, was pronounced dead at Marietta Memorial Hospital after the 10:30 a.m. accident, said Lt. Mary Pfeifer, commander of the Ohio Highway Patrol's Marietta post.

Hoover was traveling south on Market Street, about half a mile from Ohio 266, when her 1998 Chrysler Intrigue went off the left side of the road and through a fence.

"She went airborne over a creek, striking a creek embankment," Pfeifer said.

Both front airbags deployed in the crash, according to the patrol. Hoover, who was not wearing a seat belt, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by mechanical means.

Hoover was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Memorial.

The crash remains under investigation. Pfeifer said it is unclear why Hoover's vehicle left the roadway.

There was no indication of alcohol contributing to the crash, but standard blood tests were taken. Pfeifer said it will be several weeks before the results are available.

Friday's crash is the second fatality the Marietta post has investigated this year in Morgan County. In each case, the individual killed was not wearing a seat belt.

"Safety belts have been proven to reduce the extent of injuries" in crashes, Pfeifer said.

Pfeifer noted people can be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt; however, vehicles cannot be pulled over simply because a passenger is not wearing a belt.
