Gama Perruci, dean of the McDonough Center for Leadership and Business, will serve a two-year term as Marietta College's Interim Provost and Dean of the Faculty beginning July 1.

President Jean Scott made the announcement to the campus community this week.

"Dr. Perruci is a truly distinguished teacher as well as scholar, who has also served the campus in a number of leadership roles over the years," said Scott, who announced her intention to retire after the 2011-12 academic year."Before making this appointment, I talked with a number of faculty and staff, and it became clear that Gama has earned profound respect and has the support of his colleagues for his teaching and service to Marietta College. He will be a strong leader and an even stronger advocate for the faculty, so I am grateful he is willing to take it on."

Scott said under the terms of the appointment, Perruci will not be a candidate for the position when a search is conducted in 2012-13.

The contract of current Provost Rita Smith Kipp wasn't renewed.

Perruci served as Visiting Professor of Leadership Studies and Political Science at Marietta college in 1997-98 and was appointed Associate Professor of Leadership Studies at Marietta College in 1999. He became Dean of the McDonough Center in 2003 and was promoted to full professor in 2009.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Journalism from Baylor University, a Master's degree in International Journalism from Baylor and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Florida. Before coming to Marietta College, he served as Assistant and Associate Professor of Political Science at Birmingham-Southern College.

"I feel very honored to serve in this position during President Scott's last year at Marietta College and the first year of the new president," Perruci says. "This is a critical moment in the college's history and I'm excited to be able to make this contribution. We often tell our students to step up and make a difference. This appointment allows me to model the way."

Perruci is active in professional organizations, serving as Interim Chair of the Board of Directors of the International Leadership Association, Inc., and is widely published in his field.
